That wouldn't be "Inn of the sixth happiness" would it?

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958)

The irony being it was on TV earlier this week...

I've just sat down and watched this right through for the very first time. I must say that despite some rather incongruous casting, I did rather enjoy it.

Is it just me or did Curt Jurgens, in his Chinese Dutchman makeup, look incredibly like stuntman Bob (007) Simmons...?

Gladys Aylward, the missionary whom Ingrid Bergman played in this film, visited my wife's school in the nineteen fifties. She remembers her as being a woman of diminutive stature but remarkable presence.
Malcolm Arnold's score for this film based on a traditional melody rode high in the British hit parade at the time. ("Nick Nack Paddy Wack", etc.)

Yes, Inn of the Sixth Happiness, very good film and amazingly mainly filmed in Wales in the UK and some scenes in London and not on location in the Himalayas at all! The original plan was to film on location in Taiwan China but derogatory references to the practice of foot binding upset the Chinese authorities so permission was revoked so Snowdonia stands in for the Himalayas and a set of the walled city that features in the film was also built in Wales.

I don't know where the London scenes were filmed but I can remember as a schoolboy seeing dozens of extras dressed in chinese clothes waiting outside Burnt Oak underground station (Northern Line) waiting for their transport. This went on for about a fortnight if my memory serves me correctly.
