The Van perhaps (or another Roddy Doyle adaptation)
I watched a movie or drama probably back in the 1990's, set in Ireland. Lots of incredibly poor families trying to get by on the minimum amount of food etc. One scene I can remember featured one or two of the main characters very hungry and they share a bag of chips.

If it was period poverty it could be Angela's Ashes which was set in the 1930s I think.

It's very similar to this film but I'm about 70% sure it's not. Does Angela's Ashes feature a scene with two characters eating a bag of chips in a living room or their kitchen?

Sorry, but I don't know, I've never seen it. Was the film you saw set in the 30s?

I'm not sure when the movie or drama was set but considering the terrible poverty and the fact that there was this bag of chips, it must have been around the 1930's.
It might be Liam (2000) although its set in Liverpool....?
Wasn' there a TV drama with the McGann brothers dealing with the potatoe famine.........I read one of the brothers had to eat a raw chicken even though he was vegetarian![]()

LINK: "The Hanging Gale"
I think that you'll find that it's set in 2009 and is called 'The Six O' Clock News'!![]()
It sounds like a scene from the excellent RTE drama Strumpet City (1980) which looked at events during the Dublin General Strike and Lockout of 1913.
Clearly not set during The Great Hunger, if they had bags of chips..............name='Mark O']Wasn' there a TV drama with the McGann brothers dealing with the potatoe famine.........

Out of all the films that have been suggested in this thread, I have a strong feeling 'Liam' is correct.
