Movie set in early 1900s Ireland

I have a friend who is desperately trying to find out the name of a period drama movie she last saw on TV in 2001.



Here are some details:



She thought that it was set in the early 1900s and in the Irish countryside.



The plot is thought to involve a young girl having to marry a much older man who has children from his previous wife (who had died). She starts to fall in love with her husband's brother-in-law, who lives near them. The feeling is mutual. When her husband finds out, he beats her. This apparently goes on for ages. In the end she leaves him for his brother-in-law.



The lady who wrote to us couldn't recall the names of any of the actors/actresses in the film and thinks that they aren't very well known. One of the main actors apparently looks a bit like Liam Neeson (but it isn't him).



The film may have the word "swan" in the title, but she is not sure.
