Try NBC experiment in Television The Engagement, starring David Warner, 1970
Well, I am sure someone knows this film. Mid-80's TV screening of a 60's comedy about a young guy called Boot, who overspends on an engagement ring for his girlfriend and then cannot afford his taxi fare!
He starts off probably a few pence shy and travels around in the taxi trying getting a few pounds here and there from relatives, friends etc. I remember 3 scenes in particular. Now these would stick in the mind of other kids watching at the time:
1) Screaming at his girlfriend (At her place of work), "Gimmie 10 Pounds you bitch or I'LL KILL YOU!". Can't be any more specific, erm sorry!
2) Literally selling the suit (and shirt of his back!) at his crummy bed-sit to pay for his fare at the end of the movie.
3) Him standing outside his place of work just before the end credits, in his pyjamas being berated by his boss for being late for work.
Many thanks for reading guys! I was about 6 when I saw this - haven't watched it since.

The Engagement, possibly, based on a play by Tom Stoppard. Made in 1970, but possibly repeated?

Yes, looks very much like it! I also remember that it contained a scene where Boot gives endless pints of 'blood for money'.
