Kim - filmed several times most famously with Dean Stockwell and Errol Flynn matches some of your memories - certainly India and the Great Game.
This film is about a spoiled brat (male) abandoned in a foreign country (I believe India) and forced to survive using his wits and with the help of several colorful characters he encounters. One of these persons tells him that life is a game and to survive you must learn the rules, Over the course of the movie the young man matures and becomes self sufficient, he eventually succeeds in finding his way back to his family. They are wealthy and have been searching for him but his Grandmother recognizes the change in him and welcomes him to the family but allows him to leave and return to the GAME. Movie is in color and probably from the 60's Please HELP

Slight chance it could be Sammy Going South though in this film his parents were killed in Egypt and the film tells of his adventures travelling to find his relatives in South Africa. In America the film was called A Boy Ten Feet Tall
You can find info on it at Sammy Going South (1963)
Also there is a thread about it on Britmovie.
