I think it's B&W. It's about a group of children during the war who suspect their elderly and live-alone neighbour of being the enemy or an alien. There is a scene when they check out his car (a VW with the engine in the back?) and their suspicions are compounded as there is no engine in the front. One of the children however befriends the elderly man who is an astronomer and teaches the child all about the moon and space. I think the mans' wife might have died which is why he stays inside grief-stricken. Anyway, eventually the other boys attack the man and (maybe kill) him as the boy who has befriended him doesn't have the courage to stick up for the man.
Anyone got any ideas. I loved the film and it has stuck with me since I watched it as a child many years ago!

Thanks, that's great. Definitely the one. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be available to buy.
