I didn't know she was still alive! Marvellous - even though I can't stand Stewart Granger will clear the diary for this one. Thanks for the heads up BE.
I thought Britmovie members might like to be first to know that the BFI will be screening the film Caravan (1946) starring Stewart Granger, Anne Crawford and Jean Kent in the week of Jean's 90th birthday, which is on 29th June. Jean will be appearing in person, in what is likely to be her last public appearance. The screening will be in NFT1.

Same here. I thought she had passed on so to speak, years ago. What an awful thing, just because that person is approaching that certain time in life, it assumed they might no longer be with us. Jack Hedley was another who was assumed dead. Doh..
IT does have to be said that Caravan is a complete load of tosh. So obviously I'll be there
She's also writing her memoirs.
I do like Jean. She is just about the only saving grace in the load of fluffy tosh that is Trottie True which I watched recently.
As the last surviving Gainsborough girl, Jean deserves a special TV tribute to commemorate her 90th Birthday.
Sadly, apart from us films buffs, I doubt if many viewers under 50 would even know who she is.![]()
I can confirm the screening will be on Jean's 90th birthday, Wednesday 29th June at 6pm, in NFT3. Which only holds 135 people, so keep an eye out for tickets!
The Jean Kent 90th birthday screening on June 29 has now been moved to NFT-1, which holds 430 people...
Just a bump to the top for orpheum, glad to hear you have booked tickets!![]()
Now ... the NFT have decided to show The Typewriter, recently recovered from the Library of Congress, at the same time. So with some reluctance as I can't be in two places at once, I have booked for that instead of Caravan. I know I am unlikely to see Jean Kent in person ever again, but my love of archive television has won the day on this occasion.
....and to mark the occasion here is the record of Caravan just gone (by 3 weeks) the 65th anniversary of its premiere at the Gaumont, Haymarket, in London:-
In declaring the source as GettyImages (logo retained) am advising on a few more "Caravan" publicity stills. Best accessing home page + search>Caravan + selecting page 195/210 and adjacent pages in sequence.
i am really looking forward to it whether or not Caravan is tosh. She is after all one of the few survivors of the 40s.
shall we have a britmovie drink after?Anyone interested - see you at the bar!
Glad to see so many members are going. Tickets are selling well, but if you haven't got one, go here:
Projecting the Archive: Caravan + Jean Kent intro | BFI
Less than a few days to go til Jean is at the BFI now. Also in attendance will be one of her co-stars, Pete Murray, Gainsborough costume designer Julie Harris and the surviving descendants of the Ostrer family, who ran the studio.
and those kind gentlemen at the RMT have decided to call off the strikes next week thus ensuring that we can all get to and from the NFT.Looking forward to it immensly.
How was it?
James, check out the Jean Kent thread in the 'Actors and Actresses' forum for more details.
