Auction house set for costume drama
by Tony Henderson:
Costume king Joe Prenelle is selling almost a thousand items from an outfits collection which took 35 years to amass.
He acquired thousands of costumes, including some worn by the stars of stage and screen, to stock his three Bazaar costume hire shops in Sunderland, Newcastle and Darlington.
Now Joe, 73, has retired and is putting masses of the outfits up for auction on Saturday at Anderson & Garland's Newcastle-upon-Tyne salerooms.
The sale will include costumes worn by Peter O'Toole in the production of MACBETH at London's Old Vic Theatre; Leslie Howard in the 1934 film THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL; Margaret Lockwood in I'LL BE YOUR SWEETHEART (1945); and Robert Taylor in QUENTIN DURWARD (1955).
Also on offer are items from Sir Alexander Korda studio's I CLAUDIUS, and THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII starring Charles Laughton.
Over the years, Joe attended opera, theatre, film studio, militaria and general auction sales, and even took in a Chipperfield's Circus sell-off.
On sale on Saturday will be costumes from D'Oyly Carte productions such as THE GONDOLIERS, English National Opera's DON GIOVANNI and flapper dresses from the Royal Shakespeare Company's SHOWBOAT....
