Elstree Film Festival 3
It's back!
Elstree's third film festival runs from Saturday 28th June with an evening of film music at Elstree Studios. Just a reminder to anybody in the Herts area - or anybody who is willing to travel - that the third Elstree Film Festival screenings commenced today, and that tomorrow we have the pleasure of the company of Mr. Richard Todd at the Reel Cinema in Borehamwood. Tickets for The Dam Busters are selling well.
EFF3 is an ideal opportunity to catch some classic films on the big screen and to see Mr. Todd in the flesh - a true cinema great... Smudge |

Well another Elstree Film Festival has come and gone, and what a week it was...
I didn't get down for the Sunday Family films, but it was my very great pleasure on Monday last to collect Mr. Richard Todd from his home and drive him down to Borehamwood for his guest session at that evening's screening of THE DAM BUSTERS. So sharp was his memory that we turned off the Sat-Nav and RT got us straight down to the old studios without a hitch! As Paul Welsh has said elsewhere, Mr. Todd was an amazing presence - charming, dapper and pin-sharp; with a rich fund of film stories. I can only hope that when I reach the age that he is now, I might be just 50% of the chap he is today. There was real affection for this great star from the audience for the screening. On Tuesday we had Ian Carmichael and Terry-Thomas (with the incomparable Alastair Sim!) in the classic comedy SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS. Seen on the big screen, SFS is quite a different film altogether, as were most of the films for the week, which are usually watched on TV via DVD. Wednesday night brought Kubrick's THE SHINING and a three-handed panel of guests, SK's Exec. Producer and brother-in-law, Jan Harlen, First AD Brian Cook and SK's PA, Tony Frewin. All provided some interesting insights into Kubrick's films and film-making. Again a totally different feature when seen on a big screen. Personally I never really registered (until now) just how much the sound design contributes to the film. Thursday was a night of Non-Political Correctness as the audience indulged itself in the 1970s nostalgia-fest of an ON THE BUSES Double Decker, with the screening of MUTINY and HOLIDAY OTB. Our returning guests from last year were Hammer stalwart (and former owner) Roy Skeggs and the wonderful Ronnie Wolfe, co-creator of the long-running sitcom. Friday night came and the week ended on a high with the second film in the Star Wars saga, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, attracting a huge audience. Special guest was Boba Fett - until he was unmasked as an imposter when actor Jeremy Bulloch turned up to set the record straight. Out in the foyer R2-D2 and C3PO) kept a robotic eye open for a Stormtrooper who had been prowling around with the notorious bounty hunter. Thanks to the amazing efforts of the Elstree Screen Heritage Team the week whizzed by and was hugely enjoyable. Whilst it all goes smoothly on the night there is a heck of a lot of the usual blood, sweat and tears expended well before then to get the events organised - swan syndrome, most definitely! Thanks again to you all for such a wonderful week of entertainment. Inbetween times, I kept myself occupied by stretching my legs out on the highways and byways of Elstree and Borehamwood, camera in hand, seeking out odds and ends of locations. It's quite something to watch a film one evening then - on the very next morning - to wander out and be in the midst of where it was actually shot.
