Default March - Jessie Matthews Centenary at the NFT

Fabulous news from the Jessie Matthews Home Page:

The NFT at London's South Bank, will be marking Jessie's centenary by screening 10 of Jessie's films starting on 1st March and finishing on 10th March 2007. In this season, the NFT shall screen " There Goes The Bride", " The Good Companions", " Friday the Thirteenth", "Evergreen", "First A Girl" "It's Love Again" "Sailing Along", "Tom Thumb" and "Jessie Matthews On TV". The latter will comprise the BBC Documentary "Catch A Fallen Star", Jessie's music hall appearance on "The Good Old Days", her last and superb appearance in front of an audience on "Night of 100 Stars" as well as her last television appearance in the 'Tales of the Unexpected' series "A Picture Of A Place". The most rare and anticipated screening in the season of films will be Jessie's debut as Director in the 1944 film short "Victory Wedding" with Sir John Mills and Dulcie Gray.

Members of the NFT can see full details in their (latest) March Programme, and are advised to prebook their tickets by post as soon as the NFT accept postal bookings on 7th February 2007.Tickets can also be booked on line at The NFT Website . In view of the full house on past attendances for Jessie's films and shows as well as the never to be repeated nature of this special season, it would be wise to book early.

The related NFT (March 1-11) programme is available free at the NFT customer services desk or can be requested by post to: NFT Marketing, South Bank, London SE1 8XT.

Members Ticket Prices are GBP 7.60 and GBP 5.25 for concessions. Non Members should telephone 020 7633 0274 for ticket availability, 0207815 1374 for membership, and 020 7928 323 for box office. A Limited number of standby tickets and returns are available on the day at the NFT box office for members, and non members at full price.

The NFT is situated on the South Bank between Waterloo and embankment bridges. It can be reached by Bus numbers 1, 4, 26, 59, 68, 76, 77 139, 168, 171, 172, 176, 188, 211, 243, 341, 381, 507, 521, 705, RV1 and X68, by Tube to Watreloo Station Southbank exit, or Embankment across the jubilee footbridge. Hopefully, there have been some film RESTORATIONS, leading to some legitimate DVD releases....I live in hope....
There is currently only one legit Jessie DVD out there -

Hello, Julian, way up there on the Island of Foula !

Yes, I very much hope that the films being screened are good prints and hopefully, depending on the turnout at the NFT, dvds of the films will be forthcoming.

I am particularly looking forward to the BBC documentary which I am told is "Catch A Fallen Star," the doc in which Dirk Bogarde is interviewed at the film studio where Jessie worked and recounts how much she was loved by everyone there. It is showing at the NFT on Thursday 8 March at 6.10.

All the best,

Barbara
