Many thanks Hugo.

A great series - they were a much looked forward-to feature of Christmas in the 1970's. The Ash Tree, A Warning to the Curious, and Lost Hearts were repeated recently. (Last year (?)).

M R James's works, being short stories, probably lend themselves to television adaptations better than to feature films; the only film of a James story that I can recall offhand is "The Casting of the Runes" - as we so often deplore in these forums, it is rarely that this and orher films from this era are shown.

Incidentally, I am delighted with the Forum - I had no idea that there were so many enthusiasts of classic British films and television, nor had I any idea that so much is available from that era.

i agree, m.r.james writings work better on television than they ever would on film as the stories are often no longer than 15 pages which can be represented ideally in the 40 minutes format used without having to embellish the tales to keep the viewer interested which would no doubt happen with a feature length production. there are plenty of other authors in that genre(conan doyle, sheridan le fanu, kipling) whose supernatural tales would be successfully adapted if treated in the same manner as the 'ghost story for christmas' series, though i would prefer the bbc to stick to james in the christmas period-maybe use these authors works for a similar series aired at halloween(which has become a non-event)

''no diggin'!!!!!!''
