I'd like to see Jake appear, he, in my book, is simply the best uke player of today. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puSkP3uym5k[/ame]
Paul, George and Joe Brown were great fans of the ukulele

I always find this performance most moving.![]()
George Harrison's lat public performance was at a George Formby convention, along with his son, Dhani. there was a Radio 4 programme on it, I believe entitled George on George.

The orchestra is scheduled to appear at 8.55am.
Before that (8.40am) Oscar-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch.
The Ukelele Orchestra of GB are excellent, well worth searching out their cd's or dvd's. Therir versions of things such as : Shaft, Wuthering Heights, Life On Mars and The Dambusters March are inspired- witty but also very clever.

As a massive fan of The Beatles, for all their faults and eccentricities, I also love this moment in the documentary. At some point in this 'scene', or setting, George starts to play one of his India-inspired songs on his ukulele, to which Paul reacts: "Oh I remember that one"! I always laugh when I think of that as it sounded obscure and unmemorable. That's why it's ironic that you should post this, Hugh, as you recently chided me for not giving The Staple Singers' I'll Take You There the benefit of the doubt (I still don't get it). But every time I hear some UN-immediate song I'm always tempted to say "Oh I remember that one", like my hero Paul!
As for the Ukulele Orchestra, I've seen them once or twice, closing an edition of This Missing I seem to remember, and thought they were fantastic. It reminded me of a happier time when The Spinners and Swingle Singers entertained audiences but their unique styles, or Jake Thackeray's and Peter Skellern's, wouldn't be allowed these days. It's either loud Pop, sexy dance moves or serious-looking Indie groups. The Ukulele Orchestra would have been ideal for Opportunity Knocks and Pebble Mill at One.

Totally agree. I saw them last month - brilliant entertainment and musically very accomplished.

Ukulele Orchestra of GB - interview for BBC Proms 2009
The band explains to Ivan Hewitt why the ukulele deserves its place at the Proms.

I can't believe it....!
The Orchestra's debut Prom (18th August) is on BBC iPlayer, but Radio 3 - not television.
Viewers would appreciate the spectacle of audience, in addition to Orchestra, playing ukuleles.
Give them time. In previous years they have broadcast the Proms live on Radio 3 and then broadcast them on TV a few weeks, or even months latername='Maurice']I can't believe it....!

Listen to some of the Ukulele Prom. The Ukulele version of Ode to Joy
The 2007 Prom "Music from Great British Films" actually happened on 14th July 2007 and was broadcast on Radio 3 that evening (or possibly the next day) but wasn't shown on telly until 28th July

Listened to this one and enjoyed the ukulele playing, but the one guy singing (or shouting) was a bit grating.
