This is a spin off from the greatest British Filmmaker thread. Whilst I agree with most of what is said I find it interesting that there are few younger or more contemporary filmmakers in it.
Why do you think this is? I must confess do doing this myself, when i read the question I immediatley thought Hitchcock! Has the industry gone downhill? |

While stories are entertainment, traditionally they are instructors of your heritage.
Any good writer of literature or filmmaker knows that the main factor of a story is character. It is also the factor that makes us concerned about the outcome of the story's subject. This has been submerged in recent film; and so, substance of film is diminished. The fact is moviemakers can still make better movies than the past, this is already true with technology, they just choose not to do it. That's why many insightful moviewatchers who are in our club here look to the past when greater films were made. Gibbie |

I have to dissagree with Gibbie. I don't think there's anyway to compare the work of hitchcock with the works of Danny Boyle and Shane meadows. For every new generation there's a style of film making which is so far from the last that it realy is incomprable. I think England has always had a great talent for telling a story, due to the inability to throw money at things, that I hope we will never loose. I don't personally think its right to make a list of the top film makers because it's not about technical skill, it's about inspiration and feeling and it's always changing.
