C. M. Pennington Richards, cinematographer and director, has died aged 93 - Britmovie

Veteran cinematographer and director C. M. Pennington-Richards died 02/01/2005.

His credits as cinematographer include Humphrey Jennings "Fires Were Started"(1943), Edward Dmytryk's "Give Us Our Daily Bread"(1949), "The Reluctant Saint" (1962) and "Obsession"(1949), Jack Lee's "Woman in the Hall"(1947) and "The Wooden Horse"(1950), Pat Jackson's "White Corriders"(1951) and "Something Money Can't Buy"(1952), Brian desmond Hurst's "Men of Arnheim"(1946) and "Scrooge"(1951) and derek Twist's "All Over the Town" (1948).

He directed episodes of "Danger Man", "The Bucaneers", "The Invisible Man" and "Ivanhoe" as well as several feature films.

I had been in contact with him recently with the view of recording sveral audio commentaries that were to begin with "Scrooge" this month. He was very keen on the idea and, had he have been in good health, wood have embraced the project.

Very sad news. Perhaps he could have told us if it is his reflection we can see in the mirror when a member of the camera crew can be seen peeping around a curtain as Scrooge (Alistair Sim) looks in the mirror on Christmas morning.

I've seen that crew member too, but it wasn't until my umpteenth viewing of this classic. I have sworn myself to silence over this detail when my daughter (now nearly 3) comes to view the definitative film of Dickens' classic in a few years' time. I bet the 1951 film would of been Charles' favourite version of his story.

Where did you hear it James? There's no obit in the Telegraph or anywhere else I can see. I need a reference to get it recorded in the IMDb.

I have put it up to go on the IMDB. I heard from a family friend because, as you know, I was expecting to record that first commentary this month. I was really looking forward to it all. I think he would have been the kid of person who could have been quite prolific once we had begun.

As far as I know and hope Val Guest is still with us. He has been Acting, Writting, Directing and even Composing for over 70 years. He would be a wonderful subject, health permitting, like C.M.Pennington-Richards as he also Directed many episodes for T.V. series.

Val Guest has already made some fine contributions having recorded several audio commentaries for Anchor Bay and interviews for DD video for the sci-fi films he made in the late 60s / 70s. I would badly like to record some commentaries with him for the Will Hay films. I tried with Carlton and now I am trying to persuade Network video to do something in this respect. I am having severe difficulty getting any info from either company at the moment.

A search on Google 'Images' gives a German poster of 'Scrooge', and a very young Roger Moore as Ivanhoe. Talk about the sublime to the ridiculous!! (hope I got this one right after my last gaff!)
