I'm afraid I only know the one about the pheasant-plucker and his mate.

Actually, wasn't the original expression 'a SPECK of dirt'? It must've got lost in translation somewhere.

No, it was a peck. But the Health & Safety people wanted it reduced to a speck - they're now trying to quantify exactly how much that is

Think of a young boy having Just William type adventures. They would have eaten much more than a speck of dirt

Now you're just pick nitting!

peck at sth phrasal verb
to eat small quantities of something without any enthusiasm

(Source - Cambridge Dictionaries Online)

I believe that this is what the expression is most probably referring to.

So, it looks as if a 'speck' and a 'peck' could be one and the same thing! But I have a niggling suspicion that you aren't going to accept that, Steve.....

No a peck is/was an imperial dry weights measure- 16 dry pints or two gallons to a peck. Measured corn etc. I was at school a very long time ago!

"I've come a long way you know!" "Equally long way to go back..."

There is more than one definition of 'peck' and I don't think I'd fancy yours on the cheek!

I blogged about SEANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON here -- it's a fairly light-hearted piece, but intended with respect and admiration.

So you would measure out a peck of corn for the chickens to peck at?
It's no wonder people have trouble learning English

Mind you, I've always been taken with the idea of furlongs per fortnight as a measure of speed. I'll leave it as an exercise for the student to work out how fast that is in miles per hour

Just to apologise at the delay in sending off the questions to Bryan Forbes. Some will have to be edited, and I am not so sure as to whether or not to include questions asking for BF's opinion of other film folk. I will ponder.

It will probably take me another week to get it together. If anyone has any short and to the point questions, please post them in the next couple of days.

Granger.

I don't think anyone is wanting/expecting great revelations. In any case BF is very candid/outspoken in his bios.

Still time to enter 'There Is Nothing Like A Dame' Quiz

this thread has prompted me to buy off amazon, a dog-eared copy of Bryan Forbes' autobiography. For some reason I never read it when it came out originally
