Ages ago there was a thread on here about a petition to get John Barry considered for a knighthood (can't find it right now).
Well I've just had an automated reply from Downing Street with their response. Here's a link...johnbarry - epetition response |

Can I be cynical and ask if any of these e-petitions have ever achieved anything? Or are they just a sop to the electorate to make us think that someone in Government is listening? I've seen quite a few, I've signed quite a few, but I don't know of any that have achieved anything Steve |

I'm surprised to learn that Mr. Prendergast isn't already a knight as I honestly thought he was. What doesn't surprise me though, is the fact that he hasn't received one yet, as it would seem that talent today goes unrewarded. This is a bloke that has composed some of the most beautiful music known to man and has done so for five decades. He is an absolute gentleman by all accounts, unassuming and has kept his nose clean all throughout his illustrious career.
In an age when the word 'role model' is banded around at any given opportunity, I wouldn't of thought you could find a better example than John Barry. I don't use this word very often, but John Barry is a musical 'genius'. |

I said "weren't keen". It's an accepted fact that many tax exiles and ex pats either have to wait longer for gongs or never get them. Noel Coward was a prime example - he only made it 3 years before he died. Charlie Chaplin another. One way to circumvent this is to make a donation to the party in power or support it in some other way. Some recipients, of course, get gongs because the Government think that it's popular with the public and that it reflects well on them.
