Default Knighthood for John Barry?

Ages ago there was a thread on here about a petition to get John Barry considered for a knighthood (can't find it right now).

Well I've just had an automated reply from Downing Street with their response. Here's a link...johnbarry - epetition response

But will they actually do anything and give him a 'K'?

Can I be cynical and ask if any of these e-petitions have ever achieved anything? Or are they just a sop to the electorate to make us think that someone in Government is listening? I've seen quite a few, I've signed quite a few, but I don't know of any that have achieved anything

Like Lord Brett I received a reply yesterday as well. Am not sure whether it will achieve anything but fingers xxxxx

Quote:
Thank you for your e-petition.

John Barry's achievements in music are well known and respected. It is easy to see why so many people want to see his record formally recognised. This is underlined by the hundreds of people who have signed the e-petition on the No 10 website calling for him to be granted a knighthood. Your support has been carefully noted.

Members of the public can nominate individuals for honours by visiting the UK Honours System website: UK Honours System.

I've just got a response from Number 10 for the petition to make Petula Clark a Dame. That says:
Thank you for your e-petition.

Petula Clark's achievements in music are well known and respected. It is easy to see why so many people want to see her record formally recognised. This is underlined by the fact over a thousand people have signed the e-petition on the No 10 website calling for her to be made a Dame. Your support has been carefully noted.

It does look like a standard form used for the response so I wouldn't read too much into it

It would be nice (wouldn't it?) if those who are the subject of an unsuccessful e petition for a knighthood could be informed by No. 10 just so as simply to show that they are appreciated.

I'm surprised to learn that Mr. Prendergast isn't already a knight as I honestly thought he was. What doesn't surprise me though, is the fact that he hasn't received one yet, as it would seem that talent today goes unrewarded. This is a bloke that has composed some of the most beautiful music known to man and has done so for five decades. He is an absolute gentleman by all accounts, unassuming and has kept his nose clean all throughout his illustrious career.

In an age when the word 'role model' is banded around at any given opportunity, I wouldn't of thought you could find a better example than John Barry. I don't use this word very often, but John Barry is a musical 'genius'.

I believe John Barry lives in New York and the Establishment are never keen on handing out gongs to ex pats.

I said "weren't keen". It's an accepted fact that many tax exiles and ex pats either have to wait longer for gongs or never get them. Noel Coward was a prime example - he only made it 3 years before he died. Charlie Chaplin another. One way to circumvent this is to make a donation to the party in power or support it in some other way. Some recipients, of course, get gongs because the Government think that it's popular with the public and that it reflects well on them.

That's certainly true.
