Michael Winner's best films are imo......

Hannibal Brooks
The Games
Lawman
Chato's Land
The Mechanic
Scorpio
The Stone Killer
Death Wish

his worse probably everything else.

Definately these five though......

Death Wish II
Dirty Weekend

Bullseye! (the first 3 letters of the title were correct ....but should added something else other than eye )

Scream for Help

The Wicked Lady

By the way UK censor James Ferman requested cuts for the UK cinema version to the infamous horse-whip fight between Faye Dunaway and Marina Sirtis claiming that shots of whipped breasts should not be passed by the BBFC.

However he was overruled following protests by Michael Winner who was supported by Kingsley Amis and Karel Reisz (among others) after they viewed a private showing of the film.

Following the introduction of the 1984 Video Recordings Act Ferman got his wish and the scene was edited by 13 secs for the 1987 VCI video release.....

BUT!! sadly they did not cut the other 98 mins.

There's a lot of dignity in that, isn't there? Going out like a raspberry ripple.

I liked Parting Shots (although it seems to be universally panned), but - to tie in with the Sexiest Actress Thread - it did reveal a glimpse of the luvverly Caroline Langrishe as a hired tart in all her lingerie'd glory

Some of Michael Winner's & Charles Bronson's finest work there.
I particularly like the ending of The Stone Killers. A great bit of cutting between the Don pretending to repent his sins and Bronson (Detective Lt. Torrey) in his car. And it finishes with a great line and a "stone face" stare from Bronson.

[Torrey and his Sergeant, in car, outside church]
Sergeant: Nothing changes, only the names.
Torrey: You gotta be kidding. We're chest deep in water. Screaming against the rushing tide.
[Don Alberto Vescari goes into confessional in church, having organized murder of other Dons]
Don Alberto: Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. I haven't been to confession for ten days... I lose my temper
[in car]
Torrey: You know, last three weeks, in New York City alone, there were 159 homicides?
[in confessional]
Don Alberto: I don't mean to be harsh, but I struck my son in anger last Tuesday.
Torrey: 3,000 criminal assaults, 6,000 robberies.
Don Alberto: Ruth, my wife, bless her, I swore at her.
Torrey: You multiply that by Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles.
Don Alberto: For these, and all the other sins which I cannot remember, forgive me.
Torrey: You remember that cartoon of an old Roman Circus, where all the lions are roaring, and the page boy yells down the corridor...
[to camera with a Bronson stare]
Torrey: You've got five minutes, Christians.

I loved Parting Shots. I don't think it would have mattered what the film was like, the very fact that Winner's name was on it consigned it to the critical rubbish pail.

Michael Winner should be championed for the great films that he did make, and there are many: The System, The Jokers, I'll Never Forget, Hannibal Brooks, The Games, Lawman, Scorpio, The Mechanic, The Stone Killer, The movies with Reed especially are IMO bona fide British Classics. OK, he did go off the boil quite seriously and made a few duffers, but most directors have. The difference is that John Schlesinger never got pelters for churning out shit like An Eye For An Eye, Federico Fellini was never trashed for the string of turkeys that he made in the 70's and 80's; i guess you could go on quite a bit.

Winner has too long been a convenient whipping boy for lazy critics. I think the guy is great. There are some of his films i personally detest, but that does not alter the fact that what was great remains great.

Okay, i'm biased.

My goodness!!! I thought I was the only person in the world who enjoyed PARTING SHOTS....

We went to see it at the flicks (yes, we found somewhere daring enough to put it on.)

I have a lot of time for Winner - after all he did found the Police Memorial Fund.

Hannibal Brooks was a good Michael Winner film, saw it in 1974 the other feature was G.I. Blues rather strange bedfellows these two films. What I remembered most about Hannibal Brooks was the perfomance of Michael J Pollard, so off the wall but fascinating to watch.

Winner should deifintely stopped from making those awful ads,"Calm down dear its only a commercial."

I don't know that Winner has produced any 'great' films.

He's done some that are more likeable than others, but he's too ham-fisted. It's more like bombast than style and technique IMHO.

But like anything else, it's a matter of taste. Obviously, for some movie goers this works.

Spot on.

Michael Winner has had a bad press but I like both him and his films.

The fact that he is forthright when stating his opinins rubs a lot of people up the wrong way - but I applaud him for it. Always a great guest on TV shows and always a good turn. Great bloke

I suppose it depends in how you interpret 'great' .... to me, Winner's films The System, I'll Never Forget What's 'is Name, Death Wish, Stone Killer, Lawman an Hannibal Brooks are 'great' films. They are still entertaining and highly regarded by many film fans years after their original releases. They have stood the test of time, to me that makes them 'great'.
