Angry Michael Winner should be stopped!

I just saw something so awful, so mind-meltingly bad that I doubt I shall ever recover. A month of scrubbing my brain out with ajax would not erase the horror I have witnessed. For you see tonight I saw Michael Winner's version of The Wicked Lady!

Between the overacting, - especially from those who should know better (Yes, I mean you, Geilgud) - the ham-fisted direction and the terrifying casting of Faye' No Wire Hangers' Dunaway, my nerves are shattered.

And the less said about the naked catfight/whip-fest with Deanna Troi, the better. Although I shall never be able to watch Next Gen the same way again.

Does anyone have a stiff drink?

MW has made some very decent films, alas TWL is not one of them. Mine's a Vimto!

I haven’t seen The Wicked Lady, but someone here once sent me a copy of Winner’s The Cool Mikado, with a little note that claimed it was the worst film in their collection and seemed to be almost apologizing for sending me a copy (even though I’d asked for it). My god they were right though, its the only film where I’ve literally cheered at the sight of “The End” credit.

Winner has effectively been stopped because the cinema no longer has a place for low/medium budget, overdirected films with slightly-past-their-peak stars. His earlier films with Oliver Reed and a couple of the Bronsons still stand up well but his directing coursened a bit later on IMHO.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

I agree .... the downhill turn started IMHO with Death Wish 2 which is awful (although DW3 is quite a funny black comedy). Scream for Help is IMHO the worst of his other thrillers.

Well I don't know. As naked catfights/whip-fests go, it's quite a good one

THE COOL MIKADO has its admirers, and you can buy the soundtrack on a (legit) CD......

It's almost worth watching for the cameo by Dennis Price as a diplomat ('Are you attached to the British government?' 'Not particularly'). But now I've told you the joke, I've saved you the trouble of fast-forwarding through 70 minutes of Mike and Bernie Winters (why would anyone put them in a film? Why?)

Also don't forget he directed the excellent West 11 with Alfred Lynch and Eric Portman

That sounds like a high quality DP appearance (in comparison to some of the ones he made towards the end...)

Some Lesbian vampires would certainly have cheered things up.
