Walker's writer David McGillivray was a film critic (and then reverted back to being one once his screenwriting opportunities dried up) so I am sure that he had his tongue firmly in his cheek when penning House of Whipcord.

I don't think he played to anybody. His raison detre seem to be to shock and break a few cinema taboos, but with the arrival of many of the notorious video nasties he was pretty much neutered. Frightmare could have been blueprint for a successful career but he never really improved on it or sought to hone his craft.
