Sir Compton McKenzie was the creator of the wonderful Whisky Galore and has been labelled as a Scottish novelist,but was in fact born in West Hartlepool (now part of the town Hartlepool).

Wow! MarkyB - you pulled that one out of thin air man! And here's me thinking that he was born in some isolated, picturesue Scots village!!
