The (American) Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced the winners of their scientific and technical awards. Amongst the unknowns (to the general public) comes this :
To Laurie Frost, Peter Hannan and Richard Loncraine for the development of the remote camera head known as the Hot-Head.
In use for over a quarter of a century, the Hot-Head has brought the possibility of safe, remotely-operated shots to every filmmaker.
Laurie Frost is camera assistant on A Clockwork Orange & Barry Lyndon.
Australian-born Peter Hannan is cinematographer of (amongst others) :
The Stud (!), The Missionary, Monty Python'sThe Meaning Of Life, Dance With A Stranger, Turtle Diary, Withnail & I, The Lonely Passion Of Judith Hearne, A Handful Of Dust, Longitude (TV miniseries) and The Gathering Storm (TVM).
Richard Loncraine is director of The Missionary, Brimstone and Treacle, Bellaman and True, Richard III (McKellen version), The Gathering Storm (TVM), My House In Umbria (TVM) and Wimbledon.
They don't get Oscar statuettes but will receive Academy Plaques with a miniature Oscar in relief as illustrated on this page :
