Stop-motion animation has been around since the silent-movie days, but many would agree that few have put their personal stamp on the technique like Ray Harryhausen from his "Mighty Joe Young" (1949) to "Clash of the Titans" (1981) and most of it under the pressures of low-budget filmmaking.

Harryhausen is currently touring the States through May. His book "The Art of Ray Harryhausen" is a fascinating look back at his amazing career from his high-school days when he built mammoths out of his mother's old fur coat to the present.

If you are in the California area, here is your chance to see the 85 year young Harryhausen along with Craig Barron, glass-matte/special effects specialist and author, another hero of mine.

In celebration of the Rafael’s seventh anniversary, we welcome Ray Harryhausen, the legendary giant of fantasy filmmaking, stop-motion animation and special effects, who remains youthful at 85. Harryhausen makes his fourth public appearance at the Rafael, during which he will give an illustrated talk about his fantasy creature designs and screen a beautifully restored print of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958).
