Hi all,

I know I'm asking for a bit much here, but can anyone please find the contacts (preferably e-mail contacts) of the following directors?

-Lina Wertmuller
-Jane Campion
-Sofia Coppola

even if its not their direct contacts, anything remotely close would do. I can't even find their home pages/fan sites. It would be really great if I could speak/e-mail them about their work.

In fact, as well as the above, if anyone could give me the contacts of any existing female directors, it'd be great- so I can e-mail them some questions and stufff, and hopefully get some kind of response.

I'd be ever so grateful for any suggestions/help. If it is possible to get email contacts for the above, it'd be incredible for my research.

Thanks,

Passion Fruit :)

Hello, Passion Fruit,

Try googling some of the major agents. Their webpages will tell you which clients they represent. Also try googling each of the three directors who may have their own websites. Surely Sophia has something out there. The trick of research is coming up with multiple handles or words/phrases for your search engine. It's out there. Keep trying. Also try your library for reference works that have lists of theatrical agents plus their contact info. Try a free trial membership of IMBDPro which will give you all, or much of the information like this that you need for your research. Last resort, how about your research director who ought to be able to point you in the right direction?

It's all out there. Good luck in the searching and the paper,

Barbara

Hello Barbara,

Thank you for your help. I'm definitely going to try your suggestion of getting a free trial membership of IMBDPro. Unfortunately my research director has been absent with the flu, and I'll only be able to speak to her when she's back. I want to try your idea about searching agents, but I'm afraid I don't know of any (not even well known ones). Because I'm studying media studies, the subject doesn't really centre around the film industry- (like film studies) so I kind of need a starting point.

Would you (/others) be able to give me say, a list of well known agents or something?

I'll try looking for Sofia Coppola's website too.

Hello, PF,

Glad to be of help. Been there, done that as a beginner in research. Believe me, sooner or later you'll be out there on your own with no one giving you answers, so knowing the basic research steps and questions to ask will stand you in good stead for future papers, no matter what the topic. I would stand back and Google broader areas, such as "theatrical agents" or "agents for directors" which will give you tons of info you will have to sort through, but that's the nature of the research hunt. Eventually, you will find the agents for the three female directors you listed if in fact IMDBPro doesn't immediately. For example, a Google I just did for "Agent for Sofia Coppola" coughed up lots of goodies, including an in-depth interview Sofia did discussing her role as director, etc. of Lost in Translation.

So all the information you want is out there. Zoom out with a general search and when that doesn't work, zoom in with more specific words/phrases.

Good luck,

Barbara

For Sophia, call the Directors Guild of America Membership Dept: (310) 289-5350. They'll tell you the name of her agent plus contact info. She's also a member of the Writers Guild, and they give out agent names: (323) 951-4000.

Jane Campion may or may not be a member of the DGA, but you could ask them. If not, perhaps they can direct you to the Australian equivalent organization.

Lina -- you're on your own!

Good luck.

Hello, Lina,

I wish you much good luck in your search for material.

And Woman to Woman: I could have fed you the answers. But I preferred to suggest ways that would empower you to conduct your own investigation as an independent woman researcher...following in the path of the independent women directors you have chosen as the focus of your paper.

Go for it.

This is so funny. I picked 'Lina' up from AndrewLA who said "Lina you're on your own" I thought he was talking to you instead of referring to the third director. ROTFL.

Best,

Barbara

-Lina Wertmuller
-Jane Campion
-Sofia Coppola

Three well-known BRITISH film directors.....

How about
Wendy Toye
Muriel Box
Jill Craigie

who would all be more relevant to this list !

Thanks for your suggestions julian_craster. The thing is, I'm actually doing two projects at the moment... one on british female directors, which is what I initially posted about, and the other is research on the only three female directors ever to be nominated for an oscar- which are:
-Sofia Coppola for Lost In translation
-Jane Campion for The Piano (1993-I think, could be '94)
-and Lina (... tee hee...) Wertmuller for Seven Beauties. (late-1970s)

Speaking of which, does anyone know where I'd be able to get The Piano, and Seven Beauties? they're quite old films, and I'm not sure if the local Appolo video store would have it. It should have Lost In Translation, but I don't think it'll have The Piano and Seven Beauties. I'd prefer it if anyone could suggest shops rather than websites, because I just want to rent them out. Thanks

If you can expand the concept beyond directors, you might consider Muriel Box as the most influencial of all these women. Hitchcock's wife was cited above as one unheralded woman whose influence on movies was enormous. Same with Box. While Craigie and Toye worked on a handful of movies, countless movies passed through Muriel Box as they were conceived and developed and produced. She was a writer, producer, director and studio administrator. Her sister-in-law Betty Box would be another candidate for "most influencial" woman filmmaker.
