Hi John

I found an address for camera operator Jack Atcheler in Kent, who worked for you on City of the Dead and Foxhole in Cairo (as Desmond Dickinson's operator), but whilst conducting another search, I could not find him on the electoral register. i then discovered that a Jack Atcheler had passed away in 2000 (there are only about 10 Atchelers in the UK) who was born in 1923. Would this put the Jack Acheler you worked with at the right age bracket?

I was hoping to interview him for the BECTU project.

Hi there,
That's probably him. A good operator, and fun to work with. Perhaps you would pass on the address. It would be nice to send a message to his family.
All the best John

One of the joys of being a hobbyist is the places and names that acquire a meaning for you that would probably never otherwise have claimed that significance in your personal mind. Hence my pleased smile when I was browsing a 1960 TV Times and came across an article about the fifth year of Granada TV, with a short column:

TOPS IN DRAMA
Sidney Newman
Drama Supervisor, ABC

In 30 weeks of it's fourth year, Armchair Theatre has shown its popularity by being in the National Top Ten not fewer than 25 times. How has this come about? The best scripts that money can buy, written especially for television. Our team of writers and directors is made up mainly of young men brimming with ideas.

Our staff directors - William Kotcheff (voted Director of the year by his colleagues in ITV), Philip Saville, John Moxey, Charles Jarrott and Guy Verney - have set a new standard in camera work and production style.

I've really enjoyed finding his films since my brief membership here. Someone passed along 1960's MISSION IMPOSSIBLE episodes by him, and I don't know if anyone working on those enjoyed them as much as I did, watching. Thank you, JLM.

Thank you Buffalo and Moor. It is comforting, and rewarding to get a pat on the back after all these years.

It gets better. A friend has, just today, sent me a transcription of a review from 'Variety', stemming from an American broadcast. I had mentioned to him some while ago that I had heard of the review, but never read it:

THE BIG KNIFE

With Patrick McGoohan, Louise Allbritton, Paul Carpenter, Maggie Smith, James Clark, Mavis Villiers, Martin Miller, Eric Pohlman, Alfred Burke, Daphne Anderson, Phil Brown

Writer: Clifford Odets
TV adaption: Ken Hoare
Director: John Moxey
90 Mins., Tues., 8:30 p.m.
Associated-Rediffusion, from London

Credit for a remarkably good television presentation of this powerful play goes to Ken Hoare who did a stand out job adapting it for the medium and to a first rate cast which brought the pieces vividly to life. Under the guidance of director John Moxey, "The Big Knife" was a fine production mounted expertly in a grand setting by John Clements. The presentation can hardly be faulted on any count and must be ranked as one of the gems of British tele-drama.

Acting was maintained at a high standard by the entire cast but special mention must be made of the performances by Patrick McGoohan as Charles Castle, the movie star with a load of problems, and Louise Allbritton as his wife. Two other notables were Martin Miller (Nat Danziger) and Maggie Smith (Dixie Evans).
Bary.

I assume Bary was the reviewer's pen-name.

What a shame no-one managed to 'preserve' these things, but I always feel that reading an original review like that gives them a real freshness. I thought you might enjoy reading it, if you never got a copy of the magazine at the time....

I promise not to pester your Thread anymore.....

You are certainly not pestering. Thank you for the added information.

I remember PG, in one of the few on camera interviews I have seen him give, mentioning that production so it must have made an impact.

I have only just discovered that the US actor Darren McGavin had died a couple of years ago. Darren starred in what is IMHO the scariest TV movie ever made, The Night Stalker, directed by John Llewellyn Moxey.

I knew Mr. McGavin had moved on, but I didn't realise that second connection (I really must study at imdb more!). I concur about Night Stalker. I had been a Dracula fan, from watching Bela Lugosi, but that show gave the whole concept a transfusion of new ideas....... and it was scary!
