Beryl Virtue's daughter Sue is also a very active TV producer. Sue is (or was, don't know the details) married to Steven Moffat and Sue has been the producer (or executive producer) on quite a few of the shows Steven has written as well as lots of others.

Surely you'd have to add Betty Box to that list. Not only was she the UK's first female film producer of note, but she was (and I believe still is) the most prolific and commercially successful.

She also had to get past the likes of Michael Balcon in order to succeed. Someone who didn't care for female producers. Not an easy task I'd wager!

Here autobiography, 'Lifting The Lid' is well worth a read.

I intentionally didn't mention Betty Box, Muriel Box or Wendy Toye as they have been covered quite well in existing books, literature, and by academic researchers, esp Justine Asby at UEA....

I am trying to suggest new territory for feminist inclined researchers !

It's an interesting question. I think that female producers are now fairly commonplace and successful so contemporary feminist studies are perhaps less likely. Justine Ashby et al were perhaps interested in women working within the studio system which might be expected to be more patriarchal. Beryl Vertue is perhaps more at the tail-end of the studios, when television had become a bigger player.

Aida Young does sound like someone worth researching. Since there are now so many film students looking for research ideas, all three of your suggestions could be under scrutiny at this moment for all we know.

Regardless of the more academic study I'd love to see Beryl Vertue write her autobiography. She started off as a secretary for Associated London Scripts and has worked her way through some major changes and seismic shifts in the industry--she must have some interesting tales to tell.

Add Alfredda Brillaint, who produced Tinker (1949) and had her own Indian film production company.
