One can see now how Bergman has influenced this master's whole oeuvre

Not much of an influence on Michael Winner then! It's a bit like asking Britney Spears her opinion about Jimi Hendrix!

It would probably be more interesting to ask Michael Winner his opinion of Britney Spears .

I was on holiday last week when I read that Ingmar Bergman had died. Absolutely gutted. He is my second favourite film director of all time after Michael Powell. I've seen many of his films before both on DVD and at the NFT season in 2003. I saw 'Sawdust and Tinsel' for the first time recently on BBC 4 but haven't watched the documentaries yet which I have taped. I will now watch them as a tribute to a man who was - and I know the word is much overused but I belive it is true in his case - a genius.

Poor old Michael Winner, probably one of Britains most commercially succesful film directors, he doesn't half get some stick on this site!!! IMHO he has made some good watchable films as for Ingmar Bergman, yes, an important film maker, RIP, and I believe Woody Allen wanted him to appear in Annie Hall in the scene in the cinema foyer when Allen deflates a" know it all" talking out loud patron by producing Marshall McLuhan from behind an advertising board.to tell the guy that he is basically talking rubbish...very funny scene. Allen had contacted Bergman and he had agreed to appear but then was not available for the shooting schedule so McLuhan stepped in instead. That would have been priceless to have Bergman and indeed as the Allen character says " if only real life were like this!"

I think Jimi Hendrix' current opinion of Britney is even better. I'm sure it would be something like "Please - I'd rather stay dead."

STOP PRESS!! Michael Winner will be coming out of retirement to remake "The Seventh Seal", now retitled "Death Wish 7 and a Half". As Chuck Bronson is unavailable, Jeremy Irons is slated to play the Von Sydow role and Jenny Seagrove will be around to iron underpants as needed. Shooting begins in Clapham next month.

Michael Winner was once nominated by Brando as his favourite film director of all time,

That's because he told Brando on the first day of filming "The Nightcomers" that he (Brando) was such a great actor, he wouldn't presume to direct him at all.

Im sure there is talk of a remake of "The Seventh Seal".......now which hollywood film director is conceited and brazen enough to remake a European art house masterpiece for mass consumption in the USA? God help us, no one I hope, but Stephen Soderberg would probably think its okay to have an unashamed pop at it, well he has already remade an Andrei Tarkovsky film. I really think "The Comic Strip" should reform and do something on this.........." Look who's playing Arthur Scargill... effing Al Pacino! Brilliant.........."Look who's playing "Death".....effing Tom Hanks!....
