I'm looking to write something on him as I've been continually surprised and impressed by the stuff I've seen his name on recently (it's taken me a long time to get to it).

Charles Frend is a director I have taken a bit of interest lately. Of course his most famous work was the peerless The Cruel Sea,but he also directed another Jack Hawkins' favourite of mine, the underrated and little shown on television,The Long Arm. Frend seemed to be a director of his own style, solid workmanship with an eye for detail.
