The only thing that it lacks is a rockin' soundtrack.
If only they had played some great 50's songs on the juke box + on the road.

Somebody has put a clip of the film on Youtube and they have added "Saturday Night At The Duckpound" (the best rockin' U K instro 45 of all in my opinion) by The Cougars and is a "must see clip"

There have been recently a couple of programmes to mark the centenary of Sid James' birth, first there was The Many Faces Of Sid James on BBC2 and then Not Just A Dirty Laugh on BBC Radio 4 Extra. I felt the TV programme could have had one or two more clips of interviews with Sid. I know he didn't give that many interviews, snippets of ones he did give have been used on various programmes previously eg.The Unforgettable Sid James, Sid! (video release narrated by Jonathon Ross).

Would be great one day to hopefully see some interviews in full ;)

There are already threads under this name/on this film in the Actors and Actresses and the Film Location sections, so mods feel free to merge if you think you should. I just wanted to draw attention to the film itself. I read about it (having seen it years and years ago, I think) in the magazine I chatted about in 'publications'. The Amicus article dedicates a full page to the film, and begins with the author describing a brilliant scene towards the end of the film (giving away the plot unfortunately) which sounded very impressive. Obviously the main attraction is that the stars are Peter Cushing and Vincent Price playing two actors in horror films, mired in unexplained gory crimes. But the article also made a good point about the timing of the film (1974): "It deserves to be (re)seen because of its possibly unintentional position as the final door closing on a specific way of seeing 'fantasy' films, buried beneath the popular impact of two US blockbusters that changed everything: Madhouse came out a year after The Exorcist and a year before Jaws ... the most appealing thing about Madhouse is the way it is a kind of homage or nod to a particular style of 'fantastique' which even as it was being filmed was on the point of death ..." This is a good point and easily supported by the clips from previous Vincent Price (and Karloff and Rathbone) films used in Madhouse, which add to the 'old-fashioned' feeling of the film.
But as the article goes on to say, this is a film which arguably influenced Halloween, Funhouse and the Scream series, among others.

Anyway, old fashioned or not, while not a masterpiece, there's a lot to enjoy here: after all - how's this for a Britmovie cast?
How about Peter Cushing finally playing Dracula (at a party)?
London is, among many other things, a place of passage. Lives may begin or
end within its boundaries which take place far away. And Londoners spending
most of their lives far from the city may still feel connected, like Graham Greene’s exiled vacuum-cleaner salesman in Havana or Lambeth-born Charlie Chapin, whose return visit is an important episode in Richard
Attenborough’s fine biopic. Mixed feelings about the metropolis is a theme running through this selection of films set only partly in London: for some
it represents home or a place of safety; for others, escape is the
priority. And in the case of Michael Apted’s account of the anti-slavery campaign, events in London would have a world-wide resonance.

On Tuesday I went to a local talk given by Ed Harris the author of Britain's Forgotten Film Factory: The Story of Isleworth Studios. The West London studios produced films between 1914-52. The studios are now flats and an industrial estate.

The studios were founded by Berthold Samuelson, one of the greatest, yet unsung, British film moguls. After his decline, the Kordas and Sam Spiegel moved in. One of Samuelson's early films was the first UK Sherlock Holmes film, the silent A Study in Scarlet. Buster Keaton appeared in a film there when his career was on the rocks due to alcoholism.

Later films shot wholly or partly at Isleworth were Things To Come, The Third Man (Welles took one sniff of the Vienna sewers and rushed back to Isleworth for his close ups - ironic as the studio is next to Mogden Sewage Treatment Works) and The African Queen (Bogart and Hepburn were the only actors who went to Africa for location shots).

Shepperton Studios publicity machine falsely claimed to be the venue of many of Isleworth's productions To prove this, Ed Harris showed some shots of the filming of The African Queen with Isleworth semi-detached houses in the background.

Evening Chronicle 16/04/2013)
'Forget Carter, Ralph was first'
by Mike Kelly

If you think that GET CARTER was the first so-called film noir based in Newcastle, think again.

Over thirty years before Michael Caine came to the city, the perhaps even more unlikely figure of Ralph Richardson featured in a bleak but compelling movie based on Tyneside.

In 1939, he played hard-up barber Will Kobling, who steals £100, from a factory, which he has to use to pay off debts run up by his wife to a local draper called Pillegar.

The draper comes up with a scheme to blackmail Kobling. Later, his business facing ruin, Kobling decides to challenge Pilleger and, when a huge fire breaks out in the neighbourhood distracting the police and locals, he kills the draper in a fight.

However, as the local gossip that he is the killer intensifies, Kobling comes close to breaking point. He is finally pushed over the edge when he recives the dreadful news that his wife and baby, who he had sent to stay with relatives, have been killed in a road accident.

Film critic David Quinlan described it as "grim but gripping". The film was given an A (adults only) certificate.

In his book, European Film Noir, Andrew Spicer wrote: "A riveting psychological study. With its sustained doom-laden atmosphere,...its adroit mixture of location shooting and Gothic compositions and Richardson's wonderful performance as a lower middle-class Everyman, ON THE NIGHT OF THE FIRE clearly shows that an achieved mastery of film noir existed in British cinema."

The filming of it, of course, made the Evening Chronicle in May 1939 as readers were told "Murder film is made in Newcastle".

The report said: "Such players as Ralph Richardson, Diana Wynyard, Romney Brent, Mary Clare and Sara Allgood have been making scenes in the heart of the city for a new film called ON THE NIGHT OF THE FIRE. The film begins with an opening shot of the Tyne Bridge, filmed from the Northumberland County Hall. The following scene shows Richardson watching the steamship Scandinavia passing beneath the bridge on its way to Dunston.

A passenger steam train, having left Central Station, is crossing the High Level Bridge at the same moment. Other locations the director included are the Sunday Quayside Market, Dog Leap Stairs and below the Swing Bridge.

The film opened at the Queen's and the Pavilion, both in Newcastle, on June 24, 1940. The Chronicle reviewer was not impressed: "This film, for which parts of Newcastle were used as background, errs on the side of morbid and grim. As general entertainment in dark days of war it is, in my opinion, a dismal failure."

However, after a US screening in 1986, film critic William K. Everson described it as "Britain's first bona fide Film Noir".

It's fast approaching (may 26th) What would have been Peter Cushing's 100th Birthday. As a huge fan of Peters I ( as usual with these things) are expecting a nice documentary on his life, or a season of his films maybe... Am I going to be disappointed again by Modern British T.V. More than likely.

Dose anyone know of anything coming up? I know Whitstable are having some celebrations for their most famous resident. Which is in June of all months, but I will be hoping to get down for a day at least.
