Shout At The Devil - a Peter Hunt film

Watched Shout At The Devil - Roger Moore, Lee Marvin and Barbara Parkins - last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Based on a 1913 real-life event and on the best-seller thriller by Wilbur Smith who co-wrote the screenplay ... Shout At The Devil is deftly directed by Peter (OHMSS) Hunt, who used several Bond production people for his film.

This was Peter Hunt's second collaboration with Roger Moore after his excellent thriller Gold (IMO Roger Moore's best Bondian performance) also based on a Wilbur Smith best-seller.

I discovered that Peter Hunt's Shout At The Devil had an original run-time of 149 minutes - however because of a poor critical reviews the studio cut (some say butchered) the film down to 115 minutes - which is now the official DVD run-time - and means the first half of the film has confusing plot jumps - not what Peter intended at all.

Last night, BBC2 restored some of the film's original cut with a run-time of 127 minutes - much improved upon the official DVD. There were two brief audio dips on the end-credits - probably from the BBC source print - and only the opening/end credits were shown in the correct widescreen ratio - the audio was variable - picture quality was very good - but most importantly the run-time was significantly extended.

At 127 minutes - BBC2 seem to have broadcast a partially restored version - which may be closest to Peter Hunt's oriiginal director's cut we are likely to get.
Very well done BBC.
