Sighted: Ah, There You Are!

I thought I'd start a thread for known actors, actresses, extras, stuntpersons and production crew who have appeared uncredited in films and television series. These sightings are of people we do recognise, but have not been credited for one reason or another.

To start off with, some examples:



A slightly blurred Anthony Bate as a "boffin" in Dentist on the Job (1961), about to be waylaid by Kenneth Connor (partially hidden here) and Ronnie Stevens in the gents! Anthony was credited in the earlier film in the series, Dentist in the Chair (1960).



Now here's a favourite of mine recently mentioned in another thread, Hilda Barry:



Hilda has credits going back to 1950, but not here in the first episode of WILLIAM TELL "The Emperor's Hat" (1957). Hilda has only one scene and a few lines as an anxious villager.



Next is our fellow forum member Harry "Aitch" Fielder, who has of course extensive credits as an extra and actor dating from 1967. Here is Aitch as a soldier having a bit of fun with a witch in Cry of the Banshee (1970), which I don't think is on his C.V.:





Eddie Powell was one of a family of well-known stuntmen and he often doubled Christopher Lee. Here he is as one of the crewmen in The Devil-Ship Pirates (1963), a role that required his expertise in stunts. The star of the film was Sir Christopher, so doubtless Eddie doubled him in some scenes too:





Finally, a better-known uncredited appearance is DOCTOR WHO's producer 1969-70, Derrick Sherwin, in the second story he produced, "Spearhead from Space" (1970) as a car park attendant, here getting some stick from Jon Pertwee's Doctor:



Derrick was apparently dissatisfied with the performance put in by the actor engaged to play this role, so he took over himself. He was of course a well-known actor from the 50s onwards prior to taking up writing and producing.



I hope this helps to give due credit to those who appearances might have been missed, and that we can add more to these examples while we do what we like best - watching British films and television!

Great work, Gerald I'm pleased you've got this under way after The Big Build-Up and can see it's taken a lot of thought - unlike the new Paris Hilton thread! Would you say this is a cross between the Extra-dominated 'Who Are These People???' and 'Unnoticed Actors and Actresses' (with a hint of 'Where Were They Then?' in Anthony Bate's case). This should mean we've covered every type of contribution to films and TV shows but you never know.



I think this new thread might be good for me as well as you, assuming I've got the criteria right, as I now have somewhere to post identified Extras, like Victor Harrington, and the fleeting appearances of more established stars. For example, I watched the film The Deadly Affair last night and spotted Petra Markham, Timothy West and Denis Shaw. All well-known to us and easily recogniseable. But I had to have IMDb's help to inform me the 'Ticket clerk' was Crossroads actress Janet Hargreaves. So I've classed her and Margaret Lacey (who was a cleaner) as 'Unnoticed'.



Good luck with the responses. I hope fellow-spotters Hummies and WhoFan can make a lot of contributions too.

Thanks, cornershop. My idea for this thread is indeed for the performers we recognise, so, for example, future sightings of our new friends Victor Harrington and Reg Thomason would be put on here, freeing up the other existing threads for those people we don't know (yet) and want to put a name to.

Aitch, I'm not sure where Cry of the Banshee was filmed - a lot was done on location (including Grim's Dyke House in Harrow Weald), or possibly also on backlot - but filming began on 20th October 1969 according to my notes.

My first photographic contribution here and it looks like Victor has found his first fan. Actually, the man

with him is none other than John Rudling, who later played Penelope Keith's butler Brabinger in sitcom

To the Manor Born. In this scene from The Invisible Man episode Point of Destruction (1959), he gives

Test Pilot Victor the go-ahead to fly a plane ... but it soon crashes (due to the evil doctor's tampering).

A few days after I spotted Victor in that ITC show he was back in another, this time in the entertaining

Danger Man episode The Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove (1965). He plays a cashier in a casino that is part of

an odd dream Patrick McGoohan is having (yes, another one!). With them here is Edward Underdown:

I have yet another excuse to mention The Day the Earth Caught Fire, Gerald, as Edward's appearance is not the only connection. Peter Butterworth's in it too, in a rare villainous role, but they didn't have any scenes together. Nor did Peter get the chance to act with his Carry On colleague Patsy Rowlands, who played one of the gamblers. Instead he formed an unusual double-act with Mike Pratt. I'll post a capture of them at 'Actors We Didn't Expect To See Together' soon.

This is a wonderful thread, Gerald Lovell. I'm delighted you included Anthony Bate. I had fun disliking his Sir Oliver Lacon in Tinker, Tailor... and Smiley's People as well as his Bret Renssalaer in Game, Set, and Match, all of them memorable series.

I felt I'd better re-post here my original screencap of our good friend Reg Thomason as I had not identified his role previously. It was from this that Aitch and Jim were kindly able to name him:







Here Reg is a pub customer, rather the worse for wear, in The Oblong Box (1969) and in fact he was a couple of lines in this one!



During the course of my look through The Oblong Box, I spotted another actor in more or less the same scene whose identity I would like confirmed! I hope to post a screencap of him later in the "Who are these people?" thread.

Edie Martin was one of my favourite pickle-faced actresses. She was often uncredited (in approx. 20 out of 59 films); yet, one can always spot her. Uncredited in her second film role in Broken Blossoms and intermittently throughout her career to her final two, Sparrows Can't Sing and A Weekend with Lulu, a fav film I always laugh with. She appeared with many of the major stars: John Mills in Hobson's Choice, Alec Guinness in The Lavender Hill Mob, Bogarde in Blackmailed, etc.



Here's a pic of Miss Martin with a reluctant Gilbert Harding in As Long As They're Happy (1955), in which she is credited. I tried to find pics of her uncredited roles, but that proved difficult without taking the time for screen caps.

If you're careful to differentiate between credited and uncredited roles IMDB are fine, in my experience.



Where you get into fun and games with IMDB is over things which are wrong and you believe need deleting. IMDB hate deleting and want you, if at all possible, to merge the offending item so that it disappears. I really enjoy finding things which are wrong and which cannot be fixed via a merger because they HAVE to agree to delete these!!

I have only put forward one amendment ( they had credited the The Good Old Days musical directorship to the wrong Bernard Herrman, the American film composer rather than the leader of BBC NDO ( no alarm bells went off when they added this originally ). The process took a while to amend ( I had to type a request for every show he was mis attributed ) but the response was pretty quick. I' didn't keep checking but it was certainly amended within a couple of weeks.

I'll do a screencap this evening. I was surprised to see she wasn't listed as about 20 other uncredited people are and she does get to make a proper speech (it's probably a longer part than she got in 90% of her films ). But she hardly ever got credited - she's got several scenes in Unpublished Story but still no credit

Another of my favourite extras popped in an appearance: Tommy Winward sitting outside Robert Morley's office in the 1989 TV version of AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS.
