I'd be very hard-pressed not to vote for FT:

"What did you expect to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window?
Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest..."

But, Steptoe is a worthy winner.

I'm sure you are correct and I have no idea how many episodes of Fools & Horses there are, or were, but for me the choice is between Fools & Horses, and Fawlty Towers. I remember Steptoe as a child and although I enjoyed watching it (probably because my brother & I stayed up a bit later on Steptoe nights lol) It didn't make me laugh the way Fools & Horses or Fawlty Towers did, and still does.

Apart from the last series (where Cleggy unfortunately looked well past
his sell by date) it has to be LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE.
It`s a timeless classic with unforgettable characters and the undoubted
quality of acting from the cast

I only joined this forum the other week but found this poll tonight. It's about time Steptoe won a 'best sitcom' contest. The usual run of the mill tv/radio polls involving Joe Public nearly always sideline Steptoe. I can only think it's because it was quite a sophisticated vehicle in that as a two hander it was always dependant on strong charactarisation and script, and much less on visual humour. It's the sort of humour that (and I hate to say this) goes over a lot of people's heads, youngsters particularly (Bloody kids!)

So much of contemporary comedy is just crass inyerface toilet based banality. Whatever happened to clever scripts that were just as dirty, but all achieved with clever double-entendres, pin sharp timing and not an 'F' word in sight?

Anyway, rant over. I'm off to dust down me old vhs copy of 'The desperate hours'.....

We didn't have Steptoe - we have Sanford and Son (based on Steptoe and Son) and of course All in the Family (based on Till Death Do Us Part). The latter quite controversial for its time but hey we wouldn't have it if there was no Till Death Do Us Part. :)

And you had Three's Company (and all of its spin-offs) which was based on Man About the House (and all of its spin-offs).

And you had Cosby which was based on One Foot in the Grave
And you had Dear John USA which was based on Dear John
Plus all the attempts to make US versions of British shows that didn't work out.
Plus all the American versions of British reality shows and quiz shows

But US TV does occasionally have original ideas as well
