On an aviation forum We have been discussing the possible airfield locations used in 'Landfall' 1949,anybody any ideas ?

One of our chaps asked the Nevil Shute Foundation...they said 'Titchfield',but there was no airfield called 'Titchfield and I think the reference was from the book text/film script.

As with most fiction writers NS Norway did not usually refer to RAF Stations etc by their proper name.

However the main character does drive past a Titchfield/Fareham signpost on his way to Titchfield so we do think it likely to be in this area.

Best guesses so far are Thorney Island and/or Lee on Solent but it would be nice to get a definitive answer.

Did the 'field have hard runways in the film? I used to live in Locks Heath, and have been past and on the HMS Daedalus site numerous times..aka Lee-on-Solent. I have to say that the screenshots look like Lee. There were probably at that time three runways if that helps. Titchfield is just up the road, past Stubbington, from Lee.

Nearby RAF Hamble was a grass 'field back then, which discounts that. RNAS Ford I think had one runway. The river I think bounded the site on the south side.

    Thanks guys...sorry for the delay
I have been doing a little more digging and am now convinced that Lee on Solent was used for much of the filming of 'Landfall'...taking a look around lee on solent on GE and also using the available 'images' + oblique viewing.
I think that the Wellington scenes were filmed in the 2 Bellman Hangars (WNW side of airfield),they are the correct distance apart, the major difference being that the rough ground in between them was later levelled for a parking apron !
Still not 100% sure where the Anson scenes were filmed but assuming either L.O.S or Thorney Island

I now have a legal copy of the film as it was released on DVD a few months back...how many other films have Mk1 Ansons and a Wellington close up with engines running ?

This google camera gives a good view of the 2 Hangars, you can traverse right to see the other Hangar
