Without checking the scene I'd imagine that if its going to Camden and its near a park its likely to be Regents Park, most likely on the east side
To all Dead Heads
I like to try and figure out where about (exactly) a film scene was shot, especially when it is from an old British film.
In the Dead of Night's racing driver's tale I would like to know the location as he waits for the bus. I think the latter may have been No. 574 going to Camden ....? The stop was apparently outside the "Park Clinic" opposite some park (!!) or gardens.
None of these items have helped at all, as yet.
Any ideas ? - Scouse Jeff neener

I'd concur with Paul E
Does anyone know the location of the farmhouse (which is supposed to be set in Kent) featured in the beginning of the film DEAD OF NIGHT? It seems familiar to me!
You haven't seen it in a dream have you?Originally posted by MEZZIPOPS@May 28 2005, 07:24 PM

Well...that`s possible.I use to live near Brenchley in Kent and wondered if the Farmhouse was located there. Maybe the house belonged to a member of the film crew..or then again..Originally posted by Holland@May 28 2005, 07:47 PM

Any ideas on the location of this evocative opening, and even more creepy ending? the house that the lead sees at the end of the country lane, the destination for his weekend. Surely a house such as this has not been demolished?

Besides Ealing Studios, one source indicates it was filmed at Stoke Park House, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire. I'd have to have another look at the film and photos of Stoke Park to really be sure.
Best,

Thanks for that Barbara, I don't know Stoke Park..had a look online, and it has a number of grand mansions. The Dead of Night cottage/farmhouse is isolated, very near/adjacent a country road, and fairly small but rambling. Maybe Stoke Park was used for the Golfing sequence... I have not seen the film for years, and I think it is not on DVD currently.(theuofc @ Mar 28 2006, 02:19 PM)

That may be right about the golfing sequence at the Golf area at Stoke Park. I wish I were more familiar with Stoke. There may also be smaller buildings like the cottage somewhere on Stoke's extensive grounds. Have a look at #H17 at this site: h(spinalman @ Mar 28 2006, 01:26 PM)

I know you've thought of this, but there is also the rather unromantic possibility that it was shot on the grounds of Ealing Studio. In other instances, I've sworn that a film was shot on location only to find out that a mockup of the location was created right at the studio.
It's an intriguing quest. Good luck to you.

Ealing's 4 acre site wouldn't support such a thing, certainly the title/ending material is genuine location. It looks vaguely Kentish to me. Also Michael Balcon lived near East Grinstead so somewhere around there is a possibility.(theuofc @ Mar 28 2006, 02:42 PM)

Hi Alan, yes that sounds feasible, especially as the slight rise to the hillside backdrop reminds me of the weald...but it was years ago i last saw it!(alan gowdy @ Mar 28 2006, 05:57 PM)

I have always understood it to be in Kent. In/around Tonbridge or Sevenoaks.

The suggestion that it is in Kent makes sense to me, but as I say, I've never been on the Ealing grounds. The rest of you who are more familiar with the actual territory there and the Kent ones will be able to judge better. Has anyone found any links which might inform us more definitively? or are there photos of the areas in Kent and Grinstead so suggested to compare with the area in the film? That would be most helpful.
Best,
Barbara
I do not know the exact location of the cottage but I had read previously that it was filmed in Buckinghamshire.
Dave.
Hmmmmmmmm
Lots of contradictions here.
Also, East Grinstead is in West Sussex, not Kent.
I did say "somewhere around there" and Balcon's house was quite near to the border with Kent. The beautiful Wealden countryside between East Grinstead and, let's say, Tunbridge Wells does not vary much in type.(mysteriesofedgarwallace @ Mar 29 2006, 06:20 PM)

I have always thought the location of the farmhouse to be in Kent for some reason, but would they have travelled that far from the studios?
Yes, if they needed to find a suitable location that was not within easy reach of the studio. They went to Scotland for 'Whiskey Galore' and the West Country for 'The Titfield Thunderbolt' for example. From memory there is not very much footage in 'Dead of Night' that uses the location exteriors and could probably have been shot in a day with no overnight expenses. The arrival, which is simply repeated at the end of the film, looks like mostly second unit stuff, even down to the dialogue sequence. All the house interiors would have been studio sets.(Harbottle @ Mar 29 2006, 10:05 PM)

Just down the road from where I live!! Methunks I shall have to venture down there when I have some free time and investigate. There are some nice litle places for 'drinkettes' up that end too, such as Fulmer (where Christopher Neame- not the actor- the other one- was born). The bus services in the area can be a bit giznay, but it's definitely less than 7 miles away from me as the fly crows.(theuofc @ Mar 28 2006, 02:19 PM)
