Default Blowup (1966) Locations

Hi ALL,

Are there any members interested in this film who would like to share location knowledge and photos with me, with a view to going on photoshoots at some time?

I am also intersted in setting up a website for the information and photos I already have, but am restricted budget-wise. Does anyone know of a good, reliable provider?

Any info gratefully received. In return I can photograph in Midlands (I'm based in Wolverhampton).

Regards,

Wasn't the Rolls-Roce Silver Cloud III "Chinese Eye" MPW used by Hemmings the Director's? I assume that the Mews were in the West End somewhere.

MPW is Mulliner Park Ward, the coachbuilders I presume?

Yes...MPW Continental style, and very prone to rust!

Info gratefully received guys.

The RR (EVM 734C) used by David hemmings was white when Jimmy Saville owned it, but got painted black for the film (along with lots of other things painted a different/enhanced colour for this film - the footpaths and grass in Maryon Park, for example).

Default Blowup (1966) - a then and now website!

Hi all,

Those of you who know me know that I am really hung up on this film.

Just to prove it I've finally (after six years research - phew) put together a website to show the world! lol.

I'm really keen to hear your feedback - the bad as well as any good - to see if I can improve it, or whether I've forgotten to include anything that might make you return to it again and again.

Here's the address: www.blowupthenandnow.com - it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Any questions, info, pics, etc are all welcome towards the cause.

Regards, Ian.

Hello Ian, enjoyed looking at the site and it's a good framework and like you say a hell of a lot of effort getting the info.

Would it be possible though to have the larger images of then and now put on the same page below each other to make comparison easier and tell us in a couple of sentences where the locations are.

Also will you be including more photos of Maryon Park?

Regards

Freddy

Thanks for the input Freddy.

It's funny how image comparison is easier vertically than horizontally isn't it?

I will address this as well as larger pics and giving away location locations!

I've plenty of Maryon Park. Should I make up a page for each location do you think? I've got a few hundred pics...

Regards, Ian.

I also love the film, brilliant website Isbright, it all reads very well and is easy to navigate, the "now" photos are really good and you seemed to have been able to match the same overcast flat lighting conditions of the original film as well as the same viewpoint and lens perspective, great stuff, well done!

Thanks, Christoph404,

I tried very hard to get the matching perspectives, but the light was out of my control!

I'm a little wary about giving away too much as I'd like to translate all my tons of material into a book. Any ideas on this, anybody?

Regards, Ian.

Spent ages looking at your site which is very remarkable and I admire the hard work you've put in - not to mention your eye for detail in lining up the shots. I presume you had the original photos with you at the time.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Thanks, earlb.

I always take a photo-viewer with me on a location shoot (sound like a real photographer, almost) so that I can line up shots as near as possible to the original screen grabs.

I used to do it by printing to A4 size in black and white on plain paper and sticking them in a ring binder. Ran out of hands most of the time!

Regards, Ian

Many thanks for this Ian, it's looking really good now.

It is funny how vertical is better than horizontal, an added advantage being that you can make them that much bigger as well.

I'd love to see more of Maryon Park, your pics deserve a showing and the park is quite central to the film.

Speaking for myself I tend to find web sites grow organically, a couple of hours/days/weeks later I'll think of another idea to include or an additional layout and wonder why I didn't think of that in the first place.

You've done all the hard work, it's now presentation and the foundations are there, sit back, enjoy it, look at other web sites and ideas will flow. Have a duplicate site you can try them out on.

How are you storing your photo collection, on a photo site, cd or on your computer?
Digital photos are great but unlike negatives there is no hard copy unless you put them on a disc or similar ( as I know to my cost).

regards

Freddy

Hello Ian. Congratulations on your website and identifying all those places. I noticed that the first
image in the locations section has one of David Hemmings' hands blurred (something I always try
to avoid when doing my own screencaps), so I thought you might like to use this version instead:

I capped the one of the schoolchildren earlier and the boy's tie looks grey to me. Very unfortunate that
their faces can't be seen, and a tragedy that the antique shop has gone. I really love the scenes there.

When you understand the past, the confusion of the present becomes clearer - John Betjeman.

Great idea! Looking at location 04, Pall Mall SW1 and the covered arch. Could this possibly be the same arch used in Three Hats for Lisa when the team are pinching
a bowler hat

I love old British films! None better.
