Can anyone tell me where the island or offshore fort is which was used during filming? I think in the story it was supposed to Scotland but obviously it could be anywhere. I would be interested in any information at all. Sadly the location fascinates me more than the film itself.

The location is Fort Clonque, in Alderney.

It is one of the string of forts built around the coast of Alderney in the 1850s.

It now belongs to the Landmark Trust and can be rented for self-catering holidays.
