As regards the cinema that AF and NR leave, that was the ABC on Chapel Bar. I checked a Kelly's directory of 1956, a few years ago, and the shop front reflections seen in the shops they pass confirm it was Chapel Bar.

To get back to the original question.

The British Flag, as seen in the film, is still in Culvert Road, Battersea. I have linked to an image (of a photograph I took in about 1986).

Sorry … I’ve come in a little late on this subject, but I’ve only just found the website.

I run a local history website in Lenton, Nottingham and I recently put a page together of local newspaper articles published before, during and after the filming of Saturday Night and Sunday Morning in Nottingham.

It gives details of dates and some locations used …

    Hi Paul B,

Many thanks for the link to what is a very interesting website. I can see you've put a lot of hard work into the site.

You have helped confirm that it was indeed the family home of author Alan Sillitoe in Beaconsfield Terrace, Salisbury Road, Radford that was used in location filming for the Seaton characters home.

    Cheers

    Dave.

Shirley Anne Field and Albert Finney outside the Council House. Old Nottingham joke "I've had my name down for one of those for years."

Can anybody tell me the name of the terrace in Nottingham that Albert Finney shot the old lady in the backside? I lived in a terrace identical to that in 1961 in Nottingham. Or can anyone put forward another site which could help me? thanks John.

    Hi John,

The location used was in Beaconsfield Terrace, Salisbury Road, Radford.

The Seaton family home in the film was actually owned by the author Alan Sillitoe at the time of filming.

I believe the houses in the terrace have since been demolished.

It is now evident from the newspaper cuttings on the history site linked to that the closing scenes were in Wembley and that the "building site" was staged by the Nottingham builders.

Also, the IMDB now states that the fishing scenes were on the Grand Union Canal at Greenford.

Thanks Paul for the link, just finished the biography and I think the crew arrived with sacks of money to pay for various locations

Can I suggest that one, possibly both "fishing" scenes are filmed around what used to be the old Stanton iron works, also a large glass company was there, which can be seen on the building behind the canal.

I believe this to be so for two reasons, firstly, before the first fishing scene, it was mentioned in the dialogue about meeting at Trowell Bridge, (or bridges) Trowell being the next village to Stanton.

And secondly, I live near to the area, and have cycled along the side of the canal, and if it isn't there, it looks so close to it!

My son and I have created several linked pages on our website, which may be of interest regarding the locations used in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.

    These are:

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning - about the film

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning - visiting some of the filming locations

Ciaran Brown meets author Alan Sillitoe

Visiting the locations was fascinating, yet sad to see just how little now remains.

The only 2 locations that remain unidentified to us are the new council estate which Arthur and Bert walk through, and the football pitch/children's playground where Arthur walks with Doreen. Neither of these are in Nottingham. Even Alan Sillitoe himself couldn't identify them when we asked him!! There must be someone who knows where these places are

What wonderful links - and what a wealth of information ! You and your son seem to have met just about everybody worth meeting ! Thank you for sharing.

The football pitch/children's playground is Stonebridge Recreation Ground, off Hillside/A404 between Wembley and Harlesden. The pitch and the playground have gone and the railway sidings are now dominated by the Royal Mail Distribution Centre. The only unchanged feature are the background houses in Foxholt Gardens.

The final scene was shot on the lower slopes of Barn Hill, to the north of Wembley, looking down on Beverley Gardens/Uxendon Hill.

Thank you for this information Alan. The only location which I still do not know is the one where Arthur and Bert walk through the new housing estate. Can anyone identify it from this image/

    Hi

Does anyone know the location of the scene where Brenda tells Arthur that she is pregnant?

They walk from a street, down some steps, into a garden.

The buildings are typical of those in West London, perhaps Kensington, and one of them is the Hotel Stuart.

There is such a hotel in Cromwell Road but it does not look like the one in the film.

The garden appears to be on a slope / sunken.
