I've watched it now and can confirm that it's a cracking film, with numerous fascinating London locations preserved in aspic as they were in 1968. The opening sequence on Portobello Road is really stunning and got me wondering how it was filmed - I presume that a hand held camera was used - if so, it's remarkable that the sequence is so smooth, given that this was in the days before the Steadicam was invented. Otley deserves a thread in the Locations section of this forum - I must take a stroll down Portobello Road very soon to see how much the shops and pubs have changed.

The plot is totally baffling, but I suppose that that's the whole point of the exercise. There wasn't a musical sequence featuring The Herd as I expected - I think they may have been in the queue for honours at Buckingham Palace near the end of the film.

I've just watched Otley, which has some of the best London locations I've ever seen, starting with this stunning sequence on Portobello Road, which seems to have been filmed completely off the cuff - notice the point at which a car gets in the way, which Tom Courtenay has to walk around - he disappears in the crowd and re-appears a few seconds later.

Well unfortunately all of them including the commercial vehicles.

Mini (proper one) was the most fun car I ever owned (sigh!).

What memories.....we used to have a car industry once I believe....

Were the mini's Austin or Morris though?

    Same with the 1100....

Thanks for those excellent stills, DB7.

Is the fourth still the exterior of the ICA on the Mall?

I'd be very interested to know the location of the riverside scene.

Was it The Herd in the honours queue near the end? Group of guys who looked a bit out of place there and a bit bored ...

    Great film btw, very enjoyable.

Snap - no doubt it's a jokey reference to the Beatles having received MBEs three years previously - they must have looked a bit out of place also amidst the military personnel and civic dignitaries etc.

Unfortunately all the buildings seen in the background of this screen grab were demolished at some point to make way for red brick tower blocks and their surrounding area. To see more of what the area I'm talking about looked like then watch when Otley is chased from the houseboat (half shaven, literally and with bacon sarnie in hand) and runs down one of the streets and joins a demonstration where one of the placards reads 'eliminate white trash'

What I'd like to know is does anyone have an A-Z from 1968 and if so could someone scan in a page of the area as I'd love to know what the streets were called at the time. Also, does anyone know when the area was redeveloped?

    Many thanks,

    Remy
