Default Luciano Pavarotti

The great tenor Luciano Pavarotti died yesterday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 71. I believe he made only the one film (Yes, Giorgio) but his voice graced several productions. He made many TV appearances including some excellent recreations of his stage successes. A sad loss.

Very. A wonderful singer!

He was not the greatest of operatic actors, in which respect he was a very old-fashioned type of opera star: it was all about the voice. And what a voice!

Thankfully, he has left a superb legacy of recorded work, audio and video, so shall live on, with Caruso, Gobbi, Bjørling and all the other greats who have gone before.

I don't know how early in his career he began lampooning his character, but these few appearances in TV and film gave me a much larger appreciation for his artistry.

Strange to think that all Luciano Pavarotti really wanted to be in his life was a professional football player.
From what I've read I'm sure he would have gladly swapped his singing voice for the chance to play football for a top team.

Nice tribute on the Beeb in the shape of a documentary made about three years ago; two particular clips were especially nice; LP with his cronies watching archive Juventus footage featuring my hero John Charles, and film of LP at Modena Cathedral in the 70's duetting with his father...who also had an exceptional voice, but worked as a baker all his life.
A story Bono told, of a lunch at LP's summer villa, when LP's father, then in his late 80's, stood up and sang, and brought the house down...he then leant over to LP, and said to him...."If only you had had my voice, imagine how far you could have gone !!"

Lovely quote.

Watching him on South Bank show last night it crossed my mind there is a facial resemblence with Bruce Springsteen.
