have been wanting to find a wonderfull orchestrated peice used for an early 1980s advert for CROWN PAINT i remember it was showing a paint by numbers scene with a woman and this very dramatic score , it ends saying " dont just paint it - CROWN it ! "

    any ideas ?

    cheers

I believe it was written for the advert, however a longer version (about 3 minutes) was made available as a record and was also used to accompany firework displays at Portmeirion in the mid-1980s.

Glad someone else remembers it. There was a longer version of the ad too

I'd be surprised if it was still commercially available, but it might turn up on ebay etc (if only I could remember the name it was released under - something paint-related like "Shades" (but not that))

To save you scrolling down to the Crown ad on TV Ark, is this it?

(edit) Ah - can't do it like that, you have to go to the link ican posted, then scroll down the page to the Crown ad (on the right hand side quite near the bottom) - then click on the little arrow in a circle icon to play it

    Wikipedia says:

Shades (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shades is a piece of instrumental music performed by the United Kingdom Symphony Orchestra, which was used in the UK as the theme to the Crown Paint commercial in 1985 The song made the UK Singles Chart, where it stayed for four weeks, peaking at number 68.

The United Kingdom Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Donald Gould. The single was produced by David Mindel and François Trichot (the latter of whom also wrote and produced the B-side, titled 'Double Meaning')

The track as heard both in the advert and on the single is entirely orchestral.
The record was released on the food for thought label in 1985 and has the catalogue number YUM 108
