Songs from THE GOOD COMPANIONS (1957 film) now on CD !

A new UK release (the CD premiere) of soundtrack songs from this 1957 British film musical.
This CD also includes four songs from the 'Diana Dors at the Venice Film Festival' stage musical GRAB ME A GONDOLA

BRITISH MUSICALS OF 1957
MCSR 3042

http://www.must-close-saturday-records.co.uk/html/pages/brit_mus_1957.html

This generously packed disc offers highlights from four British musicals of
1957.
The film THE GOOD COMPANIONS had a zestful score (possibly sung by Jill Day
and Michael Holliday who dubbed two of its stars Janette Scott and Paddy
Stone), creating a musical extravaganza from the original J B Priestley story.
It is followed by most of the original cast recording of HARMONY CLOSE, a snappy picture of a London community with a big-band-cum-revue score and an interesting cast including Rose Hill as an ex-Madame. GRAB ME A GONDOLA was one of the year's greatest successes, and is represented here by the four songs that became hugely popular, and made Joan Heal such a star. Finally, there is a vocal selection from FREE AS AIR, Julian Slade's hit musical at the Savoy Theatre,
performed here by the Peter Knight Singers and Orchestra. Sound restoration
by Alan Bunting.

I've seen the Jessie Matthews/John Gielgud version, but not this one. Does Eric Portman sing in it? He had a fantastic spoken voice that suggests a good singer, and I think he did operetta as a young man.

The Good Companions was turned into a west end musical in the 70s with John Mills and Judi Dench - Andre Preview did the music. Had a reasonable run.
