The Great Escape has to be one of the best themes of all time. It should be the British national anthem and having been surrounded by Germans all week I couldn't get it out of my head.I felt like Gordon Jackson; expecting to be caught out with a "Good luck" and responding "Thank you."My book is now on sale in Germany so I should be embracing them I suppose, but wearing socks with sandals and shorts is just unforgivable in this day and age.

When I went to Germany for a couple of weeks when I was a teenager (exchange visit with my German pen-friend, I was learning German & she was learning English) I was quite pleased when I realised that when someone bumped into me on the train home, I replied in German, without thinking about it

On my computer I have an audio folder on one of the drives split into music genres. I most often play Victory At Sea by Richard Rodgers (Irritating fact: My set of DVDs has the original awful soundtrack) Most would recognise one theme from the suite as 'No Other Love Have I. Also I love Where Eagles Dare. In the car, an elderly military style Merecedes G Wagon, 'Panzerlied' from The Battle Of The Bulge.

Went The Day Well? and The Foreman Went To France for me. They're both on a splendid Chandos CD of William Walton film themes.

The Warsaw Concerto, composed by Richard Addinsell, from DANGEROUS MOONLIGHT (1941), surpasses the film itself (IMHO).

To be fair, a soundtrack consisting of two chimpanzees bashing teacups together to the accompaniment of a cow farting would STILL be better than the film Dangeroud Moonlight itself, which is pretty awful.

I have Geoff Love's original Great War Movie Themes which has 12 great tunes including The Great Escape, Where Eagles Dare, 633 Squadron, Is Paris Burning?, Bridge on the River Kwai, The Dam Busters, The Green Berets, Guns of Navarone and I think Walton's bit from Battle of Britain (although I have the score of Battle of Britain spearately). I also like A Bridge too Far and Operation Crossbow And a soft spot for 'Burning Bridges' from Kelly's Heros.

There have been so many great war movie themes it is hard to pick a favourite. But i think mine would be The Great Escape as well.
But love the theme of Where Eagles Dare - especially while watching the film itself - the snowy mountains, German airplane, and that theme all make for a great intro.

I'm not particularly partial to war movie scores but thank you M35541 for citing Dimitri Tiomkin's score for Guns of Navarone, my personal favorite. Jerry Goldsmith's Patton is another good one.

I bought the Geoff Love War Movie Themes album from a charity shop many moons ago, and it's in mint condition. I enjoy listening to vinyl more than digital recordings. The sound quality seems better somehow, a lot warmer and you can hear every instrument in the orchestra.

The first LP I ever bought! Of course I seldom admit this, since its somewhat less than cool. On the other hand, its still not a bad album.

The theme to the documentary series The World at War is still the very best score.
