Interesting question.
The famous car chase in
Bullitt has no music. Lalo Shifrin's musical cue plays right up until the chase actually starts, but then stops. This was actually Steve McQueen;s idea, as he wanted the throb of his character's Mustang's engine to stand out.
Incidentally, in real life, it could never have kept up with the villains' Dodge Charger.
Alfred Hitchcock fired film composer Bernard Herrmann from
Torn Curtain for two reasons. Firstly, because Hitchcock was being pressured by the Studio to include a pop-like song in the score and Herrman refused.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Hitchcock had begun to feel resentful that Herrmann's music was being given greater and greater credit for the success of the films they had worked on. Being a director, this was a hard fact to accept.
