Sorry to hear of your problem....I must admit I take my eyesight for granted, it would be a nightmare to have it impaired...good luck with the doctor...
The book I hadn't heard of...I may seek it out; but I am the worst borrower in the world, so keep your copy safe !!
I had heard of Chronophone but know little about them; the one guy I know who will certainly know something about the subject I don't have a contact number for, do you know Tony Fletcher? Lovely guy, great friend too, but we only ever see each other at film do's..I'll ask him next time I see him.
Penfold. The offer of the book is there if you want to take it up...I doubt you will find a copy easily...I got mine from Ebay...It came from the Northwest Territory in Australia!...How it got there, who knows?...The only other copies I know of are at the 'Projection Box', and, I think, the British Museum, 'though no doubt the BFI will have one. The reason for my going on at length about it is because this book contains a wealth of information about the early years of cinema, both here, in the USA, and France, and is profusely illustrated with both pictures and diagrams, so...?

I don't know Tony Fletcher, probably because I lead a very sheltered life, my main avenue of communication being on sites like this.

Ken.

I have already found a copy down in Cornwall...a very good website called abebooks...and have found an email contact for Tony, and have asked him about Chronophone films....and am awaiting a reply.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Ken, you might be interested in my film music show on Halton FM 87.9. I'm on for the next two Sundays, 2pm till 4pm (Greenwich Mean Time, for any international Guests/members).

The website address is halton fm tv gm ms at haltonfm879.com and you can listen to the broadcast through that.

I play the very best music from motion pictures. Some favourites and some surprises but all good stuff. Tends to be from the 60s/70s, but I've got some newer and older stuff as well.

Hope you can tune in.

DjDave. Sorry not to have replied sooner. I may well do as you suggest - provided you can dig out a copy of
"Spellbound Concerto"?

Regards, Ken.

No worries. Leave it with me and I'll see what I can do. I've certainly got some Rozsa: I'll have to look at my CD collection.

I've checked my CD collection, and I do have a copy of Rozsa's Spellbound Concerto. Unfortunately, I can't play it: not because of the quality of the music, but simply because of its length. My copy is over 12 minutes long, and with only two hours for the show I need to squeeze in as much music as I can.

However, I will play another piece by Rozsa from The Lost Weekend, which was also made in 1945.

I hope you aren't too disappointed by this, Ken, and that the other Rozsa piece will be a good alternative.

Speaking of Rosza, because it's Easter Sunday, I'll be playing one of his epic film cues...won't tell you what it is, but it's highlt appropriate.

Hope you can tune in.

You're on the right lines. Ken. Actually, it's Ben Hur.

Rozsa didn't really want to do another biblical epic i.e. King of Kings, after having done BH. He didn't feel that he could do anything "new" and didn't want to repeat himself. Which he didn't, coming up with some more magical epic music.

However, for my money, BH is the better film. I'm not religious, but it's message of forgiveness and compassion is so well done.

Hope you can tune in tomorrow.

Best wishes

David

David. Do you have any Tiomkin music?...Somewhere I have A Cassette which includes 'Fall Of The Roman
Empire', A great medley including 'Rawhide'and High Noon; 'Wild Is The Wind; a tribute 'Symphony' to Lyndon Johnson, and a 'Symphony of Steel, And, of course, 'Guns Of Navarone'.

My own favourite work is Richard Rogers' 'Victory At Sea'...Composed for the early fifties US TV series, and from which came the marvellous 'No Other Love Have I'...Last year I was able to download the entre album.

However, I'm still searching for Ernest Gold's 'On The Beach' Album.

Regards Ken.

I'm going to play some Tiomkin this afternoon, Ken. Although, historically-speaking, the film is deeply flawed, John Wayne's The Alamo is still a good movie.

I'm also going to play Ernest Gold's Theme from Exodus. Haven't seen the film myself, but the music's a cracker.

Check out Movie Boulevard - soundtrack specialists, movie soundtracks, movie memorabilia, used laser discs in Leeds. I've bought a lot of film music from them and they're really knowledgable. They've got Gold's On The Beach (The Secret Of Santa Vittoria is on there as well).

I've got Fall Of The Roman Empire and I'll play something from it next week. Probably The New God. It's a cracker.

Interestingly, did you know that Richard Harris - who played Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus' father in Gladiator was offered the role of Commodus in FOTRE and turned it down? The role then went to Christopher Plummer.

Saw a good documentary about Christopher Plummer on BBC2 the other week. It failed to mention his best film: Murder BY Decree, a 1979 Canadian-British co-production, is, in my opinion, a wonderful piece of movie making.

Dave. Caught the first part of your show, thoroughly enjoyed it! And thanks for the mention.

For me the theremin is used to much better effect in 'Spellbound'

Rozsa used it again in the 'Red House' [47], and then abandon it, because he " didn't want it to be the equivalent of Dorothy Lamour's sarong." [from 'Music For The Movies'...by Tony Thomas.]

Many thanks for your comments, Ken.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll play that cue from Fall Of The Roman Empire next week. Interesting that Stephen Boyd played the "good" Roman in this, as opposed to his "bad" Roman in Ben Hur.

Might even play something from The Magnificent Showman - a John Wayne film - which was also scored by Tiomkin and illustrates the range of his skills.

Default I Know Where I'm Going

Just been scrolling thru this particular topic
& IKWIG was mentioned somewhere along the line.

During the Ceilidh sequence The Gals of the Glasgow Orpheus choir
sing "Mackavie, turn the cattle round Loch Killoran"
adapted from the traditional folk song/reel 'Miss McLeod of Raasay'

Hope this clears up the issue

Thanks Alex. In fact someone in the P&P email group turned up even more detail.

Hi everyone,

I too have been searching the 'net for the 'Macaphee' song - I could remember
having sung it at primary school in the 1950s whilst listening to the BBC
Schools' Programme 'Singing Together'. I'd remembered the first and last lines
of the first verse but not any of the rest! I'm so glad to have discovered it
again. Thanks Kath for giving me another start after I'd almost given up.
