A very rare live appearance by the film score maestro

Ennio Morricone, responsible for some of last century's most stirring film soundtracks, has announced plans to play London.

"Once Upon A Time In America", "The Good, the Bad & The Ugly (now used as Metallica's walk-on music) and Robert De Niro's Oscar winning "The Mission" and the intimate "Cinema Paradiso" are all likely to get an airing at the concert, scheduled for July 19 at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

The show is the first British concert Morricone will perform since a night at London's Royal Albert Hall on November 10th 2003 wowed the capital, and accompanying the composer will be Hungary's Gyor Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Choir featuring soloists Susanna Rigacci (soprano) and Gilda Butta' (piano).
Some of the classic compositions performed on the night will include material taken from Morriconne's live Warners Records album, "Arena Concerto", recorded in Verona, Napoli, Rome and Siviglia, which includes the following works:

Same with me...I'm between jobs and a bit - well, a lot - strapped for cash.

As well as the concerts mentioned above, he'll be interviewed on stage at the NFT alongside a screeing of A Fistful of Dynamite. That'll be on Fri July 21st at 6:20

Morricone is quite a regular visitor to London - this is at least his third or fourth concert appearance since the millennium.

I was at his 75th birthday gig at the Royal Albert Hall in November 2003, and it was fabulous - very intelligently arranged so that the various pieces were given some kind of thematic link. I don't have the programme to hand, but I remember the spaghetti western music was grouped together, as was his lesser-known music for left-wing Italian political dramas (Battle of Algiers, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion) - and some rousing encores too.

On the other hand, the concert before that was apparently very different - he deliberately (polemically?) devoted the first half to his serious music, which some people found disconcerting: if his 'Chamber Music' CD is anything to go by, it's towards the avant-garde end of the musical spectrum, and there's precious little evidence of one of the last century's great melodists behind it. But he kicked off the second half with 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly', and from then on he brought the house down.

I've heard this.....that he sometimes plays his concert material allong with his film work.

But no matter how good the concert music is, I would imagine that most people will want to hear the scores they are familiar with from films and CDs.

Neverthless, a giant of film composing....and the person who got me into the genre in the first place.:)

Sadly, this cincert has been cancelled.

Not sure why, but it's a shame...

Wow I'd give my eye teeth to see and hear the man in person. I have to mention Terrence Malick's Days Of Heaven, one of the most hauntingly beautiful movies ever made and also made more so by the music of Ennio Morricone.
