Default Hans Zimmer and Nick Glennie-Smith

Nick Glennie-Smith is credited on the Scores of "The Rock" and " Crimson Tide " ( among others ) alongside Hans Zimmer.

Has anyone any information as to how much of the Score was composed by this British Musician , and how much was by Zimmer?

For anyone unfamiliar with the scores, they are an unusual mixture of traditional orchestration, immense choral arrangements and modern instruments. The long track " Alabama " from "Crimson Tide" is my favourite as it moves through the moods from the quiet of the sea to fierce Action.

Sounds interesting, Johnny. Do you know if the soundtracks are commercially available?

Hi Rob - There are loads of his Soundtracks in the High Street Shops and on the net. Amazon have a CD with two of my favourites

"Gladiator" is also worth checking . " Pearl Harbour " is not particularly impressive.

Regards
Phil

Question

Is Hans Zimmer based in this country? Watching the extras in the DVD of Hannibal,it showed Zimmer conductng an orchestra for the score in an old church in or outside London. For the music in Crimson Tide,a London based choir is used to sing the sailor's Eternal Father Strong To Save. Or does he live in the USA,but prefers working with British musicians?

Misicians will travel a long way to find a building with the right acoustic. The Hilliard Ensemble, when working with Jan Garbarek for the albums Officium and Mnemosyne, always used the same church in Austria, Propstei Sankt Gerlod. The echoes and reverberations really suited the nature of their music. If you've not come across it, it's a mix of medieval plainchant from many countries, with the jazz saxophonist Garbarek improvising in real-time. The members of the Hilliard Ensemble never know when the inspirarion is going to take Jan, or in what direction he will go. It's magical.

A lot of the British choirs, orchestras and ensembles are world class, and musicians will travel to work with them.

There's also the fact that EMI's Abbey Road studio is amongst the best in the world, too.

If you've seen the multi-disc versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, then you'll have seen that all the orchestral work was done in the UK, with Peter Jackson, generally, remaining in New Zealand and monitoring via a video link.

For the most part, recording a soundtrack in Europe is a financial consideration.Hollywood pays a "buy out" fee that precludes the residual payments that American musicians recieve. On big profit making movies, such as Lord Of The Rings, this can be a considerable ammount.
However ,many composers actively choose to record with bands such as the LSO or freelance studio musicians in London.I am fortunate to work regularly as a studio musician and, speaking of my colleagues, the standard is world class. You have to keep on your toes when John Williams is standing in front of you.
I have recorded at Abbey Road on numerous occasions, especially on soundtracks by John Barry,John Williams,Mark Isham,Elmer Bernstein and many others. Studio One,the big orchestral room,is hallowed ground and virtually unchanged since Elgar recorded there, over seventy years ago. It's the Carnegie Hall of recording studios and the history bouncing off it's walls is second only to the amazing acoustics.
Hans Zimmer likes to record at Air studios in Hampstead.A converted church, the acoustic properties are remarkable. This is the venue for Howards Shores "Rings" recordings.
It's difficult to answer the initial question as to "who did what" on the Zimmer/Glennie Smith collaboration.Certain cues are individual efforts and some have differant degrees of input and crossover.Hans has such an eclectic and varied style that who knows where the joins are.

In answer to Marky B (didnt you use to sing in Take That?).

Hans lives and works mainly in Los Angeles. But a great deal of his early work was in London.I know that he jumps at any opportunity to be over here with many long standing chums. Many of his proteges at Media Ventures are British, such as Nick,Harry Gregson Williams,Richard Harvey.

Did you know that Hans played some keyboards on Video Killed The Radio Star?
Next time you see the video ,he makes a brief(blink and it's gone)appearance in the background.

Did you know that one of his orchestrators is Bruce Fowler, the legendary trombone player with Frank Zappa?

As for Jenny Agutter,I think you are getting me confused with Fellwanderer. As for (Sir) John Barry,I am not aware of a concert. I doubt I can make it,sadly.
