I remember a series from the early seventies called The Regiment, starring Christopher Cazenove as Captain Richard Gaunt of the Cotswold Regiment. Does anyone know the name of the theme music, which was also used in Richard Attenborough's Young Winston - it was militaristic and sounded Elgarian (not saying it was written by Elgar).

Young Winston certainly included some music by Elgar. Mainly "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations.

That's always played by the band at the Cenotaph on Rememberance Sunday if that helps you identify it.

Thanks, for your reply, but it wasn't Nimrod - I know,it is my favourite piece of classical music along with Fantasia Based On A Theme of Thomas Tallis by Vaughn Williams and Barber's Adagio for Strings. I only suggested it was written by Elgar and I am ready to be proved wrong on this. I think the music I am on about was played at the end of Young Winston.

    Again,cheers,Steve

The music (apart from Elgar's) for Young Winston was composed by Alfred Ralston and was released as a soundtrack LP in the 70's by EMI, but has never been released on cd, officially....although copies of the LP are still available on eBay, Gemm.com and various other sources.

However, the dvd is set for release on April 4th.

    Thanks,plasticjock

Maybe Alfred Ralston wrote the music I am thinking of,and it was used later in The Regiment. I just thought it was an old tune, borrowed from a library for the film and television.

The Regiment TV series and the film of Young Winstone both featured the Triumphal march from Caractacus (cantanta op 35) by Edward Elgar
