John Ford seemed to use 'Lorena' as a recurring theme tune in some of his best Westerns.

It was a song popular with both sides during the American Civil war much the same as Lilli Marlene was in WW2,so it's probably used because of it's period authenticity(incidentally Elvis recorded the tune with different words as Forget Me Never).I've noticed over the years that many WW2 set films and tv shows seem to feature A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square.

Because "A Nightingale Sang" was very popular with the civilians during the war. "Lilli Marlene" was mainly popular with the soldiers

Thanks woody123. Speaking of Elvis, a song called 'Stay away' that he recorded was based on the public domain tune of 'Greensleeves.'
