Soundtrack A Walk In The Woods

Also posted on the BHF: Having caught 'The Village' on the beeb the other week, (which I thought was quite good, I always liked William Hurt and Joaqim Phoenix is quite watchable, glad he didn't just turn into a pretty boy vap head) I managed to get hold of a copy of the soundtrack, put it on the mp3 and had a good stroll in the woods at around half four to five, just as the sky was turning dark, the wind blowing through the trees, you know the kind of thing. Wow, what an excellent 30 mins of music for such an occasion (cept for tracks 3 & 10, too much going on).



I was wondering, what others listen to, any other soundtracks or pieces that can be recommended for that kind of contemplative activity?

When I'm walking in the woods I prefer just to listen to the birdsong, the wind blowing through the trees and other natural sounds.



I don't find that nature needs any additional soundtrack

Not much birdsong at that time of a winter's evening, what with the cold, & wind booming in the trees Steve.

Birdspotting is easier in the winter. The birds can't hide in the foliage

They are still noisy enough if you listen out for them. Although they're often all tucked up in bed by the time you get to the winter's evening. Try them at sunrise.

I don't know about walking in the woods, but I was driving my car over Woodhead Pass last year just as a snowstorm started - I was listening to a mix CD of movie music, and "Toy Planes, Home And Hearth" from Empire Of The Sun was on, and I can't imagine a better blend of scenery and music!

I used to work in north London and drive back to SW London in the small hours. Sometimes it would be timed just as Radio 4 took back over from World Service again and they played that lovely Morning Medley



If I was even later than that then I'd be coming down the A3 just as the traffic was building up for the morning rush hour. There would be 3 lanes of lemming trudging in to town and I'd have 3 lanes of open highway ahead of me. It's cruel to mock - but I didn't let that stop me



Another nice one that I remember was driving down to see friends in Somerset in the autumn. Driving along the old A303, just as you come off Salisbury plain and start to go through the villages on the other side. The sun was low in the sky and the light was catching the cobwebs on the bushes by the side of the road. There was the start of an evening mist in the valleys, and I had a nice bit of Elgar's cello concerto on the CD. It really was a "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness"
