As far as I know it used to be standard practice to have a re-recorded version of songs on any soundtrack albums, and possibly the rest of the score as well. I think it was something to do with musicians contacts - the musicians hired for the film score session would have signed contracts stipulating their work only appear in the film, and new contracts would have to be signed with each individual musician if their work were to appear on record.

Perhaps they went for smaller orchestras for sessions designed for commercial release, which would explain, for example, why the official releases of Laurie Johnson's brilliant themes for The New Avengers and The Professionals were so weedy.

Perhaps there are some professional musicians who could comment (as ever, I could be talking through my trousers).

I think Lord Brett may be right. It's probably a contractual or financial thing.

I certainly know that the single version of Nancy Sinatra's You Only Live Twice is different from the one found on the soundtrack itself.

Its always disapointing to find out that you have bought a slightly different version to the soundtrack you heard at the cinema. It is possible to find the original recordings, they are usually available commercially but you have to look for them. I have CD double album which I bought about 8 years ago called "Cult Fiction" it has all the originall recordings of 60's ITC tv shows and more eg, The Persuaders, Dept S, Avengers, The Prisoner, etc etc
Im a huge fan of John Barry's music and have all his Bond soundtracks, on the "You only Live Twice" soundtrack album you will find the original film soundtrack recording of the theme song sung by Nancy Sinatra and arranged by John Barry. There was an alternative version of the title song arranged and conducted by Billy Strange which was released as a single and got to number 44 in the US charts and to number 11 in the UK charts. Im not at all sure why there should be different versions, as has been mentioned, there probably is a copyright and musician's royalty issue at stake but I think the copyright restrictions have a time limit of so many years? As Lord Brett says,I think we need a musician to clarify some of those points for us!!

Copyright? 50 years for the singers, which I believe is miffing off Sir Cliff, and probably 75 years or some other period after the death of the writer.
